The big negative for me was the destruction of her relationship with Trish, as their fierce friendship was the best thing about the first season. I recently re-watched season one and have to give them props for staying more consistent on Jessica’s backstory than I first realized. When she returned to her childhood home with Kilgrave and entered her old room, there was indeed a Nirvana poster over her bed - I’d forgotten that. And her nosy old neighbor Mrs. DeLuca did mention hearing her parents fight a lot when the kids weren’t around, and that Philip was acting out.
I gotta ask, is Ritter’s hair really naturally so black? It’s like negative space. I have black hair and it was never that black.
I think it is. Look what she said on twitter.
It wasn’t Iron Fist bad, but it wasn’t all that good. Having Kilgrave/David Tennant as your baddie is a tough act to follow, and while I enjoyed his “cameo” in S2, it did have the unintended effect of showing that the series feels incomplete without him. There’s a conspicuous gap where a proper antagonist should be in this season, and Jessica’s mother isn’t interesting enough to fill it. Jeri is so detached from the proceedings they might as well write her out next time around. (Sidebar: Not sure what the point was of having Elden Henson turn up to say three lines and go away again.)
Now one thing I did like was Trish turning from overbearing friend/sister into someone who ends up unforgivingly betraying Jessica. I think it makes sense given what’s been established about her and sets up a raison d’etre for season three, which is desperately needed. I don’t think they’ll make her a full-on villain, but some interesting things should happen on the way to she and Jessica reconciling.
I also didn’t mind the extended flashback, when we got to see Jessica as at least capable of experiencing joy and taking pleasure in another person’s company. I’m glad they ended it with her and her pseudo-boyfriend and his son. She’s far from healthy, whatever that means, but she’s taking steps to fashion a real life for herself. So look for that guy to be killed sometime in Season 3.
