Pfc. Jessica Lynch was captured by Iraqi troops, held captive, and injured severely along the way.
We all know this. What I am asking for is that we stop speaking about this young woman and her situation as is has been explioted by the media.
There have got to be at least a half-dozen threads about her at this time, and while her situation was grave and her rescue brilliant, I have seen practically nothing - only my own post and the post of another - on the boards thus far wishing her well and leaving it at that.
The SDMB should be above complete sensationalism. If there is one thread in Cafe about it, great, leave it at that.
That young lady deserves more than to be a point of amusement for those who wish only to lash their tongue at the American media.
While I am not the happiest soldier, I am a member of the United Stated Army, and I am really, really getting tired of y’all manipulating her situation as lightheartedly as the rest of the media has.
Please. The SDMB is above flooding itself with tripe.
Let’s try to have a live … even though, or because, we know the civilian media will not let her.
She deserves our respect whether you are for the war or not, and I would appreciate it if the threads on “movie deals” and LifeTime shows be restricted to one or two in Cafe.
Seriously, I agree with your sentiments. I hope your expressions may start the process of change. But The SDMB reflects our modern culture, in all its myriad ways. And anything that has much attention paid to it in our modern society will have attention paid to it here.
Manipulating it how? I haven’t really looked at any of the threads you’re discussing, and i certainly haven’t contributed to any of them, but i’d like to know exactly what it is that you have a problem with. All i’ve really noticed so far is people saying how good the rescue was, how happy they are that she’s alive, etc., etc.
I’m also curious: will you feel equally pissed if, in a few weeks or months, she starts appearing on every TV talk show and giving interviews for cash in all the crappy supermarket magazines?
Don’t get me wrong - i do in fact wish her all the best, i hope she recovers physically and emotionally, and i’d be happy for her to disappear from view and go back to living whatever happy life she had before this whole ordeal. But nowdays the pattern seems to be for people who achieve momentary fame to do everything they can to stay in the limelight and cash in. I’ll have the utmost respect for her if she avoids this route, because peope who take it often just end up looking like idiots and appearing on the “celebrity” editions of reality TV shows.
Gordon - Ditto. Especially now that they have identified the other 8 bodies as American soldiers missing in action. It makes the whole rescue mission seem a little less heroic, even though it was quite the opposite. They have my thoughts and prayers.
