Jesus Christ Superstar and Then We Are Decided

I’m watching the 1973 movie version of Jesus Christ Superstar. It contains the song Then We Are Decided, which I’ve never seen included in any of the multitude of versions of Jesus Christ Superstar I’ve seen or read song lists from. What’s the dealio? Was it created specifically for the movie, and if so, why? Was it originally included and just ignored in most versions?

Seems to have been written especially for the movie. Maybe to help things flow better for the different medium?

Written for the movie. The only place it’s show up on is the 2nd Russian cast recording.

Any idea why they wrote the song? While I love it, it doesn’t advance the story in any necessary way. The plot gets along fine without it. I can’t see why the medium change would require the song either.

To lengthen the movie, to qualify for an Oscar, and because it was there but not used in the stage production.

This I understand.

These I don’t. Why didn’t the movie without the extra song qualify for an Oscar, and if the song “was there” it wasn’t written for the movie, was it?

If the song had previously been released on a recording, it could not qualify for the Academy Award.

By “was there” I mean it had already been written, but not used in the original recording or the stage version. It was first used in the movie.

Oscars for “Best Songs” are for best songs first used in the movie. "You Must Love Me’ was added to Evita solely for that reason, and won the Best Song Oscar.

This doesn’t answer the question, but here is a transcript of the commentary track of the DVD, featuring director Norman Jewison and actor Ted Neeley. Scroll down about one-eighth of the page.
