Jesus' name

So I read about what Jesus’ real name is… Why doesn’t anyone else in Biblical history or any other history have the same name? There were lots of people back then with the same names, why only one Jesus?

Well, his name was Joshua (Yehoshua). And there was another Joshua who fit the Battle of Jerico. So I’m not sure what you’re asking.

Not sure exactly what you mean, by that.

“Jesus” was practically as common as “Bob” is today.

“Christ” isn’t properly a name at all, but a descriptor. It means “annointed.”

Yeah, look at Luke 3:29. Even one of his forebears was named Jesus.

Some of my references list

I-e-soun’ - Greek

Ye-shu’ a (Jeshua) - Hebrew.

And other alphabet words I haven’t figured out how to type yet.

There were a lot of Greeks in Athens named Aristotle, and there were lots of Italians named Dante, and there are lots of guys in the South named Elvis. But when someone refers to “Aristotle” or “Dante” or “Elvis,” you can infer who they mean, right?

Yes, there have been many Israelites named Jesus (Yeshua), just as there have been many named Abraham, David and Moses. But only ONE man with each name was of monumental importance. When I say “Moses,” you think of the guy carrying the Ten Commandments, not Moses Maimonides.

What I want to know is if Jesus was Jewish, why does he have a Mexican name?

[sub]yeah I know it’s an old joke[/sub]

Hush now, I had two great grandfathers named Jesus. Besides he had a Jewish mother so there.

Might be worth noting that no person mentioned in the bible had the name Jesus. English translations of the bible are another matter.

It should be noted that he was never called “Jesus Christ” in his lifetime (and if he was, he wouldn’t answer, since he spoke neither Greek nor Latin) and that “Christ” is not a perfect translation of “Messiah”. See http://www.iahushua.com/ST-RP/christ.htm .

“Working from the index of the complete works of Josephus we find reference to no less than fourteen people named ‘Jesus’.”

  1. Jesus, son of Phabet - priest
  2. Jesus, son of Ananus - prophesied the destruction of the temple.
  3. Jesus, or Jason
  4. Jesus, son of Sapphias, governor of Tiberias
  5. Jesus, brother of Onias - priest
  6. Jesus, son of Gamaliel - priest
  7. Jesus, eldest priest after Ananus - priest
  8. Jesus, son of Damneus - priest
  9. Jesus, son of Gamala (Josephus’ friend)
  10. Jesus, [or Joshua] son of Nun
  11. Jesus, son of Saphet - ringleader of robbers
  12. Jesus, son of Thebuthus - priest
  13. Jesus, son of Josedek
  14. Jesus of Galilee & his 600 followers
  15. Jesus, the Christ (dubious reference)
"In the works of Josephus, Jesus, as a name, is exceeded only by Simon (20 times) and Joseph (16). Josephus was a close personal friend of several Jesuses, especially the Jesus who was one of the last high priests before the war.
“Most of the Jesuses were either priests, prophets or bandits. It was not only a popular name, but one of distinction.”
  • Cliff Carrington, “The Flavian Testament”

I dunno about that; the sucessor to Moses and the guy who got crucified were both pretty important.

And while we’re on the subject, the author of Ecclesiasticus was called Jesus, being a Hellenized Jew.
