Derek Jeter had a 20 consecutive game hitting streak going into tonight’s game. He didn’t have an official at bat today, 3 walks and a HBP. Does that end his hitting streak? Or because he didn’t have an official at bat, it doesn’t count against it?
He got on base 4 times, which means it was a productive day- but the hitting streak is over.
Walks don’t count as at-bats when we’re calculating batting average, but the fact remains, he played an entire game and didn’t get a hit. So the streak’s over. But the Yankees won and Derek contributed to that, so I’m sure he’s not too disappointed.

GUIDELINES FOR CUMULATIVE PERFORMANCE RECORDS
10.24
CONSECUTIVE HITTING STREAKS.
(a) A consecutive hitting streak shall not be terminated if the plate appearance results in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly shall terminate the streak.
(b) CONSECUTIVE-GAME HITTING STREAKS.
A consecutive-game hitting streak shall not be terminated if all the player’s plate appearances (one or more) result in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. The streak shall terminate if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit. The player’s individual consecutive-game hitting streak shall be determined by the consecutive games in which the player appears and is not determined by his club’s games.
I found the answer on this site .
“(b) CONSECUTIVE-GAME HITTING STREAKS.
A consecutive-game hitting streak shall not be terminated if all the player’s plate appearances (one or more) result in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. The streak shall terminate if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit.”
So apparently the streak continues.
The announcers at the end of tonight’s game confirmed that Jeter’s hitting streak continues, based on the rules already quoted.
Thanks for your answer El Cheapo. I didn’t see it before I posted.
The number carries over, right? It was at 21 games coming into tonight, and I assume it’ll still be 21 when he plays tomorrow. It couldn’t possibly be 22, could it?
Okay, I’m wrong. Thanks for the cite.
SDMB triumphs again!
I assume it stays at 21. I would guess that if a player has plate appearances but no official at bats in a game, he would receive neither credit nor penalty for the game with respect to the streak. Note that according to the rules, streaks are based not on the team’s games, but the games in which the player appears. In a sense Jeter did not have any activity in that game pertinent to a hitting streak. I’m sure it will be discussed by the announcers in tonights game.
I just checked the Yankees’ site. They say:
So it’s 21, not 22.
Note also a bit of gamesmanship from Joe Torre, replacing Jeter late in the blowout game. Rather than having just one remaining AB to get his hit and extend the streak, he goes on to the next game with it intact. I sure hope that wouldn’t even have been a thought in a close game.
I was listening on the radio, Torre replaced everyone. I don’t think there was one position player left on the field from the first inning. He even put in a pinch runner for the DH. It was 12-0 at the time and the Yankees are so far in front of the rest of the AL East he is resting players whenever he can. I doubt his hitting streak was the reason. If it keeps getting closer to the record then maybe it might be a factor.
If Jeter was 0-for-1 with 2 walks and Torre would have replaced him, he’d have gotten lynched. You bet he was aware of Jeter’s 21-game hitting streak.
