Just like a Jew.
(It’s okay for me to make that joke.)
Just like a Jew.
(It’s okay for me to make that joke.)
Relentlessly persecuted? Heresy? Baalists?
I have to say I’ve never seen an interpretation of the beginnings of Judaism that involve those terms.
Didn’t I see that guy in The Phantom Menace, buzzing around Mos Espa, on Tatooine?
Are you kidding? Why would a Jew ride a Vespa?
I keed, I keed!
There were no Jews where I grew up in rural West Tennessee – at least, none that I knew about. I didn’t know any Jews until I was in college. Even then I didn’t realize that they were discriminated against that much. Everyone seemed to be friends on campus.
But after I began working, I found out that the country club did not have Jews as members. And one guy that I was dating waited a month to tell me that he was a Jew. And he made a big deal out of telling me. I think he was afraid that I would go away. It has remained a puzzle to me why there still seems to be such a dividing line.
Recently I found a book called The Jew Store. It describes life in the same rural West Tennessee area where I grew up from the point of view of a Jewish girl who came to live there pre World War II with her parents. She was about ten years older than I and lived thirty miles away. The story is true. I see the people and traditions that I loved so much through her eyes. Her words are very damning. It’s hard to face.
How can the whole world embrace Anne Frank and hate “Jews”?
In my limited understanding, it’s a money thing. A long time ago, there was some rule Christians were supposed to follow about not lending money. WAG, it was too divisive among Christians when the lender didn’t get paid back, much as many of us now are reluctant to lend money to friends.
However, the Jews had no such rule. So they became bankers etc. and eventually got some Christians by the short hairs. See, for instance, Merchant of Venice/Shylock.
Yes and no. The Jews did lend a lot of money to nobles in England, France, and other European countries. The thing is though, they had no way of enforcing the loans. They didn’t have armies or anything. What could they do to a king if he couldn’t pay back the Jews? They couldn’t do anything, is the answer. So when they asked the nobles to kindly pay them back, they were typically paid by getting kicked out of the country.
That could certainly help explain organized political movements against the Jews.
Christians (and Muslims) are not supposed to engage in usury, or charging interest on lending money. As I learned it, Venetian citizens were not allowed to be usurers in Shylock’s (approximate) time - he would have able to do so because, as a Jew, he wasn’t considered a citizen of Venice in the first place.
Well, she’s dead, and therefore nonthreatening.
BTW, I doubt that The Story of Anne Frank is on any reading lists in the Tehran school system.
Isn’t The Diary of Anne Frank one of the more commonly banned (or requested to be banned) titles from school and public libraries?
Explicit descriptions of attics, dontcha know.
Google “Anne Frank diary hoax” if you want to see some interesting, probably NSFW sites.
I don’t know TDoAF is that frequently condemned, but I think there’s a part where she talks about having a crush on another girl that alarms some folk.
As to the OP, there was also a wee pamplet getting some notoreity- you see, the minutes of the International Jewish Banking Conspiracy had leaked out…
Seriously, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” (which at one time even Winston Churchill seemed to believe), combined with the Red Scare & the involvement of Jews in European revolutionary politics & U.S. labor & liberal politics all combined to freak out many goyim.
Uh- not longer than ca. 4000 years ago, if we regard Abraham as the founder. Ca. 3500 years ago, if Moses.
I have a bone to pick with the International Jewish Banking Conspiracy. They’re at least 35 years behind on sending Jews their share of the swag, based on the fact that Mr. Neville hasn’t gotten his yet.
Never underestimate the capacity of the human mind for holding inconsistent positions.
It’s been a long time since I read “The Source.” Are you sure only 4,000 years? 'Cuz some of Jackie Mason’s jokes are older than that.
This isn’t answering the question of the 1910s, but when I was growing up in Rhode Island/southeastern CT in the 80s, there was a small, but existant Jewish population. The racism which I heard on a pretty regular basis (and it was all talk, no action aside from not associating with the Jews) was because Jews encouraged people to not believe in Jesus. By the early 90s, my family had moved to southWESTERN CT, where Jews were the majority and all of my friends were Jewish…and guess what - not one of them spoke a word about the existance of Jesus!
I would imagine that this type of fear is even more extreme in other parts of the country.
The Jewish calendar has this year as 5768, supposedly counting from Abraham. So 6000 is good if you’re rounding.
No, counting since Adam. According to that count, Abraham really was about 4000 years ago.
