Jewish Canadian Artists, Performers, etc...

Hey folks,

I’ve just spent the last three hours searching for something, ANYTHING on Jewish Canadian contributions to Canadian culture.

Perhaps I’m just not googling correctly?

I was hoping that there might be someone in this forum who has some knowledge of prominent names I might want to look up (Leonard Cohen, I know, but that’s about it), or perhaps places I might want to go to be able to learn more.

If you’re interested, I’d be happy to send you a copy of my article once it’s complete.

Best Regards,
Daniel

William Shatner? How about Gilda Radner.

Hope this helps.

Mordecai Richler? The Bagg Street Klezmer Band? Montreal’s Jewish Community?

Mordecai Richler is the obvious #1 choice, he having written a number of great books about the Montreal Jewish community.

William Shatner would be the most famous.

Others include:

Norman Jewison (director; A Soldier’s Story, Hurricane, In The Heat of the Night)
Ivan Reitman (actor/director; Ghostbusters, Twins)
Louis Weiss (sculptor)
Oskar Morawetz (musician/composer)
Gilda Radner (comedian)
Naomi Klein (author)
Howie Mandel (comedian/actor, “St. Elsewhere”)

Irving Layton?
Moshe Safdie?

Leonard Cohen, though I’m not sure if he identifies as Jewish or not.

Ah, you small timers.

Geddy Lee, bassist and singer for Rush was born Gary Lee Weinrib and is a Jew.

Was Glenn Gould Jewish? Probably not practicing, but by heritage?

Lorne Greene (dead, but he kept that Ponderosa going- his grandfather was a Montreal rabbi).
