Saban, a long-time supporter and donor of many pro-Jewish and Israel causes, has stated his main goal in multiple interviews: “I’m a one-issue guy, and my issue is Israel.”

Farris and Dan Wilks are Christian fundamentalist brothers. Together they have donated literally many dozens of millions of dollars to Far Christian Religious Right causes. Recently $15 million to the presidential campaign of Ted Cruz.

They have stated their goals in interviews and are motivated by opposition to abortion, opposition to gay rights and gay marriage, the teaching of the Bible in school, and the Biblical literacy an inerrancy of their sect, the Assembly of Yahweh. Although, hey, some consider their sect to be influenced by Judaism some, so there’s that.

Tom Steyer has a Jewish father and is a major donor to environmental issues. Beware. George Soros has donated to a host of liberal, environmental, and social justice causes as well as supporting putting pressure on the Israeli government to stop settlements and make better efforts to a two-state solution.

Truth be told few American Jews have knee-jerk support of whatever any particular Israeli administration does (heck, few have knee-jerk support for whatever any particular American administration does either). J Street has grown to try to be an American Jewish counter-weight to Aipac.

On the fundamental questions of Middle East peace, J Street occupies fairly traditional liberal territory, which of course places it well to the left of the mainstream groups. According to its “statement of principles,” the group favors “creation of a viable Palestinian state as part of a negotiated two-state solution, based on the 1967 borders with agreed reciprocal land swaps” — the formula envisioned by the Clinton administration in its 2000 negotiations with Yasir Arafat and Ehud Barak. Ben-Ami says he also favors Jerusalem as the shared capital of the two states. On the question of talks with Hamas, classed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, J Street takes the cautious view that while we should not speak directly with officials, we should engage through intermediaries with the goal of finding interlocutors willing to live in peace with Israel.

J Street maintains that most American Jews share its views on the Middle East. They are reliably liberal on questions of war and peace; three-quarters of Jewish respondents to a 2007 Gallup poll, for example, opposed the war in Iraq. The question is how much of an exception they make for Israel. J Street sought to answer this question by commissioning an extensive poll of Jewish opinion on Middle East issues. The survey, taken in July 2008 and repeated with almost identical findings in March, found that American Jews opposed further Israeli settlements (60 percent to 40 percent), that they overwhelmingly supported the proposition that the U.S. should be actively engaged in the peace process even if that entailed “publicly stating its disagreements with both the Israelis and the Arabs” and that they strongly supported doing so even when the premise was revised to “publicly stating its disagreements with Israel.” Strikingly, the average respondent placed Israel eighth among a list of concerns; only 8 percent placed it first or second.

Israel just is not a top concern, let alone the only concern, for most American Jews. And for single issue focus the Christian Religious Right is the powerhouse.

I guess some people don’t or won’t get it, but the “Jewish influence” thing in American politics is simply stupid. There’s no other word for it; it’s flatly, incontestably stupid. It is, consequently, difficult to take seriously.

Bear in mind that we are talking about a Western democracy in which the influence of seriously hard core Christianity is incredibly high, vastly more so than in any other advanced nation. It is quite literally the case that fundamentalist Christianity is so influential in the USA that Republican candidates for President are essentially not allowed to admit they believe in rudimentary scientific facts, and candidates who are obviously not practicing Christians have to pretend they are. Even Donald Trump, legitimately a political outsider and maverick politician, had to go through the motions of saying the Bible was his favourite book, even though it obviously is not, to appease millions of zealous evangelicals.

It may be that you do not notice this because you simply take it for granted. Sometimes things are so big we don’t see them.

To look at a nation in the thrall and control of evangelical Christianity and then propose it is unduly influenced by a tiny little religion that has rarely influenced much of anything is simply preposterous and unworthy of debate. It’s as if a man was brought into a hospital after being set on fire, with third degree burns to 75% of his body, and the doctor looks at him and doesn’t see the charred flesh and insists the man needs a better haircut.

While I agree with everything you’ve said there is a bit more to it. Some people in the US and abroad don’t think Israel is in the right currently regarding the West Bank and Gaza, disagree all you like with that assesment I dont think antisemitism is necessarily the reason. American support is always unwavering whatever mild criticisms our politicians might muster.

America can choose to apply pressure to Israel to achieve their aims, which may not be the aims of the political party in charge of Israel. Too bad, thats how diplomacy works. Yet it repeatedly does not. So I can understand this chaffing coming from some place other than hate for the Jewish people.

If religion is not the issue, though, why not support Israel? It’s an oasis of democracy surrounded by dictatorial states ranging from relatively benign to full-on totalitarian. On that basis alone, they’d get my sympathy.
