I wrote my father’s about 6 months ago and first, they do charge, and second, I know of no rules about not putting in dates. The paper where he lived had a web site for it, and edited it for you, though you get to look at the proof before it goes in. It comes with a visitors page. You can pay extra for a picture, which I did.

In an unrelated note, our local paper ran an obit of a woman who died at around 40, with a picture taken some time ago. In a bathing suit, I think. You don’t usually see cleavage on the obits page.
