From Salon.com’s Broadsheet. Basically two bloggers, Moe Tkacik and Tracie Egan, go on about sex and rape and are supposedly offensive–but that’s what you get for feeding the trolls, eh?
I can’t figure out if they’re just trying to offend as hard as possible, or if they actually believe any of the things they’re saying. It also kind of makes me want to get raped in Williamsburg just to prove them wrong.
I did think it was interesting that for all her bravado about rape not being a huge deal, Moe kept going on and on about her own date rape…including hanging out with the guy who did it to her. No, nothing wrong there.
That’s the link to Tracie Egan’s own blog. She seems to operate under the impression that having a lot of sex makes her very interesting…you be the judge. Despite the fact that I know they are both appealing to the lowest common denominator, it has a John Waters, train-wreck, I can’t look away feel to it.
I was taken aback by the smug, entitled, facile glibness of these girls–and I call them girls advisedly. These are not assertive, independent minded women; these are girls taken with of their own “rebellion” and “fame” --they are wrapped up in their own cocoon of narcissism. I couldn’t even keep them straight, name-wise, and didn’t care enough to try. I do think they believe what they are saying–there is no intentional social commentary or satire here (too bad).
The withdrawal method works for her? How about she may have an undiagnosed fertility issue? How can she say something so irresponsible?
She doesn’t get raped because she doesn’t hang out with frat guys? WTF? I’m no fan of frats, but can we stereotype much? She hasn’t been raped because the guys around Williamsburg aren’t real assertive guys (paraphrase)? Really?
One of the worst bits (and I am spoiled for choice re the worst bits) was the more petite one saying how she’s been “victimized” by her date rape, but she was not about to turn him in-the hassle!–and how she liked to hang out with him. The darker haired one posits that she paid a guy once to rape her. Do go on…
They remind me most of small children, literally playing with fire–clueless doesn’t even begin to do their facile, insulated (and insular) approach to men, sex, life. Hey, girls just wanna have fun. You go girls. And here, have another drink–it’s on the house.
(what I am most disgusted at is that they have a public forum to display their ignorance and stupidity to the world. I have no problem with women having sex and lots of it. I have big problems with irresponsible information about sex and irresponsible advice re sex and rape. Also, for every person who is amused by their “antics”, I’m sure there will be at least one who --as Winstead points out–will try to emulate them.)
To me it just seems like they’re trying to be funny by acting like immature assholes. It’s nothing new. Male comedians do it all the time. The only reason that this is noteworthy, and that people are taking it so seriously, is that society (as a whole) kind of expects more from women - expects us to be smarter and more mature than men. But in fact not all of us are. Oh well.
Male comedians who act like immature assholes tend not to do well once the “shock” value has worn off. These girls don’t even do the “shock” thing–they’re kinda whiney about the whole thing. They’re not defiant or political in their positions, they just wanna get drunk, use drugs and screw. Ok, if that’s how you want to live your life, but don’t give them a forum in which to influence others–why and how they get even a piece of a blog baffles me.
Yes, there is a double standard when it comes to acceptable behavior for women, but that is not the case here. No one is saying that these women should keep their legs crossed, hell, no one is even criticizing the drink and drugs. It’s the “withdrawal” prevents pregnancy for me stance, coupled with the whole “rape isn’t all that bad, really, unless there are weapons” meme that I’m protesting. There are worse things than rape–I’ll give them that. To me, it’d be worse to actually be one of these women. Now there’s a nightmare I’d want to end.
Haven’t watched the entire thing, but they seem quite, quite drunk.
I actually quite like Slut Machine’s writing (not to mention her nickname), but she doesn’t seem able to deal with any criticism, however reasonable.
And what lisacurl said.
