Jian Ghomeshi, host of Q on CBC, fired.

::ahem::

Back to this topic - ah, sorry. I hadn’t realized there were similarities and yeah, this is meat for any opponents, innit? I don’t think ethnicity would be a primary factor here, either. Not because we’re even-keeled like you are portraying Canadian media - it just doesn’t seem to have an angle at this point. This seemingly deluded criminal has enough angles to his story as it is.

Big Ears Teddy cares nothing for ethnicity.

I’ll say one last thing about the idiotic hijack that 74westy started and then I’ll desist… I was trying to think of something good to come out of a horrific situation, one in which [most] people probably wouldn’t ever want to read an abuser of women again. As thus, I totally couldn’t care less about the stupidity of believing “That all books are sacred OMGZ!!1!” is a valid approach in light of this guy’s antics. So, he can trivialize the heinous acts of the Nazis with my suggestion. On here, it’s to expected. If the person I was offering it to ain’t interested, that’s all I need to know. Now, I’ll let that guy tilt at windmills and let everyone else go back to discussing that creeper Jian. Sorry for my part in this. It wasn’t my intention.

Yeah who knew calling for a book burning would be controversial?

Yeah, still don’t care in context. Nice try though on keeping the hijack alive!

Montreal blogger Steve Faguy has written a good blog entry, Some things to consider before your next Jian Ghomeshi think piece, bringing up many important points about the nature of the case, and other subjects.
(Article was written last week, I think, but updated more recently as new information has come to light.)

Pffft. You made an obnoxious suggestion and i no more continued the hijack than you.

I have now lost count of how many times I and other people have tried to stop the hijack and steer the thread back on course. I don’t want to say anything nasty about other posters, so I won’t. I’m not a mod, but can I just ask us to please stay on topic? Can we just drop whatever the hijack was about, and stop insulting each other?
(I hope I’m not “junior modding.” I just want to get back on topic.)

Out of curiosity, has American media been covering this story much? Anyone know?

It looks like there’s almost nothing in American online media; CNN published one article early on that was mainly about Ghomeshi’s claims that this was all consensual BDSM, but there doesn’t seem to have been anything since. It looks like the same thing happened with the New York Times – just one early article about his firing. Except for an opinion piece in Slate, every reference on the first page of Google News listings is from Canadian media.

For fucks sake. No one who says " I’m stopping the hijack by getting the last word in" is even remotely trying to stop the hijack.

The only reason I know about it is from here, and I listen on and off to Q. (I was in the car yesterday when an announcement for it came on, but of course nothing was mentioned and I’m sure if I heard the program, I would’ve just assumed he’s on vacation.) I haven’t seen any US media on it.

Yeah, I guess he’s not as well-known in the US as he is in Canada. I don’t know how many people in Canada had heard of him either, actually. Though perhaps he’s more famous now?

Slate.com has published a few articles about it.

I was kind of a fan of Moxy Fruvous back in the day, but couldn’t have named any of the members, and if it weren’t for this issue, I wouldn’t be able to pick Ghomeshi out of a lineup, nowadays.

So, yeah, he’s a lot better known than he used to be. Too bad he got better known by being a scumbag.

I’ve seen it more on what’s labeled as feminist type sites than anything else. I just hope he gets what’s coming to him.

This excerpt from the article had me laughing:

Only the Neo-Nazi rags cover it. [ducks and runs](Hey, I burn outdated books and outdated materials, but I never realized that I was a Nazi before.)[/ducks and runs]

Article from Slate: I Knew About Jian Ghomeshi.

It seems to me that a lot of the Canadian coverage is coming from the Toronto Star. Or maybe it’s just that they’ve been running a lot of articles on him. Or confirmation bias? Or because, if I remember correctly, they’re the ones who had that first big article with the accusations, that sort of got this story started.
