At the risk of pushing this into MPSIMS, I do remember in 1983, when Franco Harris threatened to surpass Jim Brown’s record. Brown, ever the big ego, made a pathetic effort at age 47 to come back and prevent Franco from topping him. If I recall, he started training with Seattle, but never made the team. Franco got cut by Pittsburgh, then he started playing for Seattle in 1984. The Seahawks must have been desperate at that time. Unfortunately, Franco was well over the hill, and was cut by Seattle after a few games, only 192 yards short of Brown. Later that season, Walter Payton claimed the record, and Brown wisely made no further attempt to protect his crown.

Brown spoke on the record about this issue and explained that he was thinking of suiting up again because he thought Franco Harris was a second-rate running back who wasn’t worthy of the record. He attributed Harris’ phenomenal yardage to longevity rather than to sheer technical ability. He also said that Walter Peyton was a worthy successor to him.
