Jimmy Carter

We *can *cut back on the hostility toward whoever has the temerity to run for office, and maybe we’ll have more decent people offering themselves as public servants.

Damn, there goes another irony meter.

Regards,
Shodan

“Irony” and “Regards” in the same post, with no sense of …

You can only dream of being the man Jimmy Carter has been. Same for all of us.

News conference scheduled for tomorrow. Apparently he will be speaking directly rather than just issuing a press release. I am not surprised.

[QUOTE=Johnny L.A.;18598960 people only remember that the mission failed, and blamed Carter for the collision that caused it to fail.

I suppose blaming Carter for that is the same logic that causes people to give credit to Obama for “getting bin Ladin” instead of the US Armed Forces and some intelligence folks.

Do you remember mile long gas lines? My grandfather passed away in 1977-it took 3 years to find a buyer for his house. Meanwhile, businesses were closing left and right. Then Carter foolishly allows the deposed Shah to enter the USA-which touched off the embassy occupation (and later kidnapping of the embassy staff). Carter allowed the IRanian criminals to hold American citizens illegally, while apologizing for the shah. had he shown some measure of fortitude, this would not have happened.
Sorry, but this was not an appropriate response to state sponsored terrorism. Carter thought he could deal with the Iranian criminals, and allowed the Iranians to have publicity for 3 years.

The Shah was our guy. Of course Carter let him into the country.

I’m not sure it’s fair to blame the president for long gas lines or high interest rates (presumably what caused the long delay in finding a buyer for your grandfather’s house)

Allowing the deposed Shah to come to NYC for medical treatment seems like a terrible idea in retrospect, but at the time I don’t think the reaction was foreseeable. (some reaction was to be expected, but we had never seen anything quite like the Iranian Revolution)

Carter’s handling of the hostage crises sure looks bad, but there weren’t many good options and I admire that he attempted diplomacy.

To the extent that Carter’s presidency can be considered a failure, it’s largely to the extent that the American public is childish, short-sighted, and easily deceived by propaganda and appeals to shallow patriotic pride.

Carter’s primary mistake was treating the public like adults who make rational and empathetic decisions after considering actual facts.

It turned out that people really preferred a cheerleader who appealed to their basest tribal instincts and approached complex issues as if they were sporting events.

To the extent that we are ruled by “shitstains,” the reason is that we deserve nothing better.

Hell yes.
I’d have launched a nuclear strike from an aircraft carrier, called the Ayatollah up on the phone and told him if the hostages were not freed in thirty minutes, he would not be able to pump oil for fifty years.

Thank G-d I was not, nor am not the President.

That is the main point-a US President cannot be perceived as weak-that merely opens the door for extortion and terrorism. Much as Clinton’s passivity emboldened Osama Ben laden. Had Carter ordered a devastating airstrike, the hostage thing would have been over in a week. Carter thought that the world leaders he was dealing with shared his values (honesty, decency), and forgot that most of them came to power by being gangsters and killers.

I think an airstrike would have caused the Iranians to begin beheading hostages.

And Carter’s abortive rescue attempt killed a lot of good men.

Breaking news now: The cancer has spread to his brain. It’s in “multiple spots.”

I guess that seals it. :frowning:

Damn.

He’s getting radiation treatments, certainly after serious thought and prayer. But he can’t be cured of being 90.

Blaming him is like praising Obama for shooting Bin Laden.

I was 12 years old when my 6th grade class had a contest making election posters for Carter or Ford.

I had no idea then what Republican or Democrat meant, I just knew that I liked Jimmy Carter. My poster said simply: Jimmy Carter, he’s no Plain man. I won the contest.

Good luck with your fight Mr. Carter. Once again, I’ll be rooting for you.

I voted for him and have no regrets about that. He’s a good man and I wish him as peaceful an end as possible.

I will be sad when he passes.

From what people are saying in the other thread, it sounds like the prognosis can’t get much worse. Jimmy Carter most likely won’t live long enough to vote in the next election.
