JK Rowling & WB announce new movie in Potter Universe

Resurrecting this thread nearly a year on – I’m wondering, has anyone heard any more about this project; progress on it, or otherwise?

I’ve delighted in the “wizarding zoology” element in the Potterverse, and love the idea of a film involving the doings of Newt Scamander almost a hundred years ago. I’d be sorry if this planned undertaking would seem to have sunk without trace.

Yeah, it’s still moving forward, and it’ll be a trilogy.

fortysomething. 2003 comedy with hugh laurie.

The most recent rumour is that David Yates, who directed the final three Potter films (well, two and two-halves), wants to direct the Newt Scamander films also. As he’s currently doing Tarzan, then another wild creatures movie (if that’s what these ones will be about) shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for him.

Lobot and GL – thanks for info: glad to learn that the whole thing hasn’t faded out. Its being seen as a trilogy, would seem positive; though thinking of the Peter Jackson * Hobbit* films, one could just possibly have reservations…

I really feel we missed out on some great Brittish actors that I would have personally prefered in certain parts.

Patrick Stewart would have made an excellent Mad-Eye Moody.
Jennifer Saunders was my pick for Professor Trelawney along with her AbFab co-star Joanna Lumley as Rita Skeeter.

Young Dumbledore?

My money is on Ben Wishaw. He’s “Q” in the latest Bond films, he’s a Brit who’s star is on the rise.

Thought I’d bump this thread since the trailers are out.

To address some of the above speculations:

The movie is based in New York (1926, not 1918 as originally announced), so there will be many American actors.

No Dumbledore listed on the imdb page. However, Colin Farrell’s character is named “Percival Grave”, and Dumbledore’s 2nd name is Percival… pure speculation - Dumbledore may have left England after his sister’s death, and taken on a new identity in America.

Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson aren’t listed in the cast either.

Ron Perlman plays “Gnarlack”, which we can only hope is the WWOHP equivalent of Hellboy.

Yates is the director.
