There’s a new trailer out (replacing the teaser) for Prisoner of Azkaban. You see a little more of the Dementors in this one.
It looks good, but the kids (particularly Ron & Draco) are really starting to go hormonal- do you think they’ll be able to use them for another movie or will they be too nearly adult-erous to be believable as fourth years?
At one point there was talk of making this into two movies due to the length of the book. They’ve evidently opted on one, which is unfortunate as they’re having to leave out the Dursleys, a major shame since that’s the installment in which they meet Mr. Weasley.
Feel free to hijack for anything Harry Potter related.
As long as they don’t let the schedules slip, they should be fine using the same kids. This will be three movies representing three years of book time taking three and a half years of real time. (assuming a year to make the first movie) The kids are growing up in the books too.
As long as they don’t wait too long between movies it should be okay to use the same kids. I think it would spoil it more by changing the whole cast than having them look a little older. I believe this is why they went right into making the next film after finishing POA.
They are still close to the ages of their characters, except I believe the Draco kid is a little older, but this is what happens to kids at about 13/14. They can have sudden growth spurts. I believe it’s even mentioned in the books that Ron grows a lot over one summer.
By the way, the best part of the new trailer is Hermoine decking Draco. I don’t recall if that’s in the book or not, but I loved it.
I haven’t seen the trailer yet, but Hermione bitch-slapping Draco is one of my favorite parts of the book, so yes, it is in there. I agree that they should be okay with the current actors as long as they keep the movies comin’. If Ron got replaced, I would be devastated. I just adore that kid to the point of feeling like a pedophile. (I know, TMI.) One of the books does have a mention of Ron sprouting up between school years, and I’m pretty sure OotP mentions that Harry had a growth spurt as well. At least they no longer need to hide Emma Watson in all those bulky robes. I saw a picture of her shortly after Chamber came out, and by age 13, it’s conceivable she could have those boobs, let her have 'em!
I was a little less that thrilled at the thought of Gary Oldman as Sirius (not that I don’t like Gary Oldman, I just didn’t think he was right for the part), but having seen pictures, he looks perfect. I know nothing of the actors playing Lupin or Wormtail, but I really can’t wait to see who plays Moody in GoF.
Hm. Now I have to go check the IMDB to see if that’s listed yet …
You are talking about the Goblet of Fire here, right? Sorry, I got confused at first since PoA was what started the thread.
Personally, I don’t think the Dursleys played too much of part in GoF, and would be one thing they could easily drop. I’m guessing that they’re really going to have to shorten the Qudditch World Cup (since that takes up the first ten chapters of the book), the Yule ball (pout), and maybe even remove the Rita Skeeter subplot entirely (difficult but not impossible). But as long as they do a good job with the confrontation in the graveyard ([opinion]which was one of the best scenes in the books so far[/opinion]), I’ll probably be satisfied.
Maybe they should release this one like LotR did, with your normal movie version and then the extra-half-hour extended version on DVD. Something the Save the GOF Campaign may want to think about as an alternative, now that it’s all but certain that it’s going to be a single film.
I don’t see how they could keep the Dursleys out the Order of the Phoenix movie, though, since they play an integral part of the plot.
I think they should continue to use the same actors. One great thing about it is that they actually change as the movies advanced. I have a hard time picturing the kids growing up as I read through the novels… they’re still the look the same in OotP as they did in tPS in my limited imagination
Emma Watson is 13, so she’s dead on for this film at least. As I recall, Daniel Radcliife’s a year older, and the kid who plays Ron is two years older…but he’s got that weedy adolescant look that will probably carry him to the end if they film them fast enough.
Draco’s got three years on age-correct Hermione…and he did look quite odd in the trailers. 16-playing-13 seems to be pushing it. But it just wouldn’t be the same if they replaced him.
The Dursleys were only in GoF briefly, but that’s the one where the entire Weasely family bursts into the (bricked up) fireplace at the Dursleys, and have to fix it. Then the twins drop one of their “ton tongue taffys”, just KNOWING Dudley won’t be able to resist!
My friend told me that they don’t plan to use the actor who plays Harry for all the films. This is because he will be too old towards the end. (I can’t remember what she said about the others.) Of course, I have nothing to back this up and she could be completly wrong.
Emma Watson is thirteen NOW, ready to play fourteen year old Hermione in Goblet of Fire. Daniel Radcliffe is fourteen, ready to play fourteen year old Harry. And Rupert Grint is fifteen, to play fourteen year old Ron.
In the world of movies, where 28 year olds often play 16 year olds (Michael J Fox, BTTF II & III), I can’t see what everyone is so concerned about.
One thing that bothers me a bit is that apparently they’ve ditched school uniforms. It looks a bit jarring to see all the kids running around Hogwarts in jumpers and jeans, robes only being on for special occasions.
I think you’ll find the lack of uniforms only occurs on days when they’re allowed into Hogsmeade, or on weekends. A good percentage of the story takes place on such days.
I was just watching The Borrowers, one of my favourite movies, and it occurred to me that Jim Broadbent could probably play a good MadEye Moody. And Celia Imrie might be a good Rita Skeeter.
I pictured Joanna Lumley (Patsy from AbFab) as Rita Skeeter. Of course I pictured Jennifer Saunders (Edina from AbFab) as Mrs. Weasley (with Eric Idle as her husband).
