Joe Dimagio

The City of San Francisco wants to name a city park after Joe Dimagio. <sp?>
Dimagio’s lawyer says he will sue unless the City names something big after Joe, like the SF airport or the Bay Bridge.

Can he do that? Does he have a case?
Does the city need permission to honor some one?

Cecil answered this one before, and the verdict was that if you’re famous enough that your name is that well known, it’s in the public domain for all practical intents. It also helps if the actual owner of the name is dead. So, I doubt the surviving DiMaggio clan would have much of a chance of winning such a suit.
