Joel Hodgson wants to bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000

I’ve only got one episode to go. There’s one thing about this incarnation that I don’t like: Gypsy dropping in to make one drive-by (and usually lame) comment per episode.

Does anyone know what the box she drops off and picks up every episode is supposed to be?

The MST3K crew is going on a live tour, a bit like Cinematic Titanic. Here’s the video announcement! They’re going to riff Eegah with new jokes, plus a special new movie not yet announced, in some cities (not mine :()

Joel has ‘helpfully’ answered that - the ‘payload’.

And here is the tour list. Yea! Portland is on the list!

Excellent. I was hoping it would be at the Schnitz.

Damn. Wrong Portland. The closest I got is Boston.

I just dropped an absurd amount of money on a VIP ticket to the live show. My bank account will not be happy, but what the fuck? YOLO, as the kids say.

And I get to meet Joel! I’m fanboi-ing my 14-year old heart out.

Just a quick revival of this thread to report on the opening night of the MST3K Live tour in Boston last week. Short version: TOTALLY AWESOME! As I mentioned above, I splurged an obscene amount of money for a VIP ticket and I’ll be honest and say that experience was not worth the money. Don’t get me wrong: I had a great time, got to meet Joel and Jonah and have a picture taken on stage with them, plus a swag bag with a signed poster and a laser-cut Tom Servo cutout for my desk. But there were too many people for it to feel really “VIP” - we spent most of the time in line. So, amazing but overpriced.

However, the show itself was worth every penny. The new riffs for Eegah were hilarious and there is something magic about being with 1000 or so like-minded individuals laughing at great jokes. I was concerned that it would be a little weak since they already did Eegah and I’ve seen it many times. But the jokes were really fresh, Jonah and Bots were responding to the audience and cracking each other up (Crow was particularly responsive to audience reactions). It felt “live” in all the right ways.

Boston was the first night, so the flow of the event, with the live host segments, props, recorded video from Kinga/Max, etc. was a little rough around the edges. Not terrible or super-clunky, but I bet it will get smoother as they do some more shows. But to be honest I liked it that way; it had that homemade and handmade MST3K vibe that I really love about the show. And Joel was very present, literally wandering around the audience pre-show looking for a couple of kid volunteers, grabbing a camera and shooting some close-up video of the host segments. You could tell he was super-involved, trying to make sure everything went smoothly and everyone had a good time.

So, my take: GO SEE IT! It’s a great night, a hilarious new take on Eegah, and feels very much like MST, only live. Highly recommended. Just maybe don’t do the VIP thing unless you’ve got money to burn.

In short: IT STINKS!

Wow, impressed and kind of jealous that you went. How much was it?

cough $300 x 2 tickets cough

Holy cow. Wow. Dude, that’s insane!

Yup. Ramen noodles for a month to recoup  But hey, YOLO.

Husband and I went to MST3K Live in D.C. last night and had a great time. We didn’t spring for VIP tickets but it was still a great show. My only complaint was that for some reason the stage lighting was very blue throughout the live segments, which made Crow look like he was the color of a Haas avocado skin instead of his normal shiny gold/chartreuse.

During the intermission, I stayed seated so noticed the ads for the merchandise. I told my husband that what they really SHOULD be selling at the merch table was things from the invention exchange because some of them were pretty clever. I want the giant bubble wand from the first episode. He wanted one of the snake-shooter cups but they were $90. $90!

I just got back from both Detroit shows (Eegan and the secret surprise movie). I won’t spoil the surprise unless someone wants me to in a spoiler box, but it was AMAZINGLY bad (and freaking hilarious).

Eegah was one they did way back in the early days, when Joel started the show. The second film which was (redacted) was way, way worse.

Spoiler-box it or PM me, please!
