John Dingell, former Congressman, dead at 92

John Dingell, former Congressman from Michigan has died. He was 92.

He was the longest-serving member of Congress on record, serving from December 13, 1955, until January 3, 2015, a span of over 59 years. He was one of the final two World War II veterans to have served in Congress; the other was Texas Representative Ralph Hall, who also left Congress in 2015. Dingell was a longtime member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and chaired the committee for multiple terms.

He represented Michigan’s 16th District, a position that was previously held by his father, John Dingell, Sr.

Rather than link to a story about his death that will tell you pretty much exactly the above (some of it was copied directly from his Wikipedia entry), I will link to an excellent op-ed piece he wrote for The Atlantic last December:

I Served in Congress Longer Than Anyone. Here’s How to Fix It.
