John Kerry was in a band in the 60s called The Electras. Was that the same band that did the garage punk classic “Action Woman”?
Nope. That band was based in Minnesota and featured Earl and Bill Bulinski, Jerry Fink, Gary Omerza, and Tim Elving. They had several notable singles, including “Dirty Old Man”, “You Love”, and “Soul Searchin’” They changed their name to “Twas Brillig” in 1966, a move which helped to precipitate their demise.
The song “Action Woman” was originally recorded by a band called the Litter, and that’s the version that I think most people are familiar with. According to All Music Guide that song (and most of the Electras’ material) was written by producer Warrren Kendrick.
Senator John Kerry also played in a garage band called the Electras. The band was made up of students at St. Paul’s high school in Concord, New Hampshire. They recorded a few songs on a cassette (using one microphone) and reportedly pressed 500 LPs to sell at dances where they played. For the morbidly curious, sound samples are available at KerryRocks.com.
My uncle has a copy of the Electras’ LP. It sounds pretty good considering its age and the conditions under which it was recorded. Kerry doesn’t sing and there aren’t any fancy bass solos, but it’s an enjoyable listen.
