John Oliver is leaving "The Daily Show"

and is getting his own show on HBO. While I will miss him on The Daily Show, I will eagerly tune into his new venture on HBO.

Well, shit, now I’ll have to get HBO, even if for no other reason. I love John Oliver.

I didn’t click the link. I’ll miss his contributions to the show, but does anyone really leave the Daily Show? (I mean, since Craig Kilburn or whatever the hell his name was. I think he was the last one to make a clean break.)

Darn it. I’ll miss him. I do wish him well though. He deserves his own show.

He’s earned it. I’ll miss him on the Daily Show but I’ll do my best to catch this new series. I think he’s one of the very best correspondents they’ve ever had.

Ouch.

I hope the new show puts him in the anchor chair. If so, I’ll watch it.

Besides Carrell, Colbert, and Mo Rocca? How were those exits not clean?

I know I’m in the minority, but I’m Ok with him leaving. I’m kind of over him after having host all summer long.

Agreed. I’m looking forward to his HBO show…

Damn. I don’t get HBO, and don’t want to start paying for it just for this. I did become a big John Oliver fan while he was guest hosting.

He will also be doing at least 6 **Community **episodes this year. I look forward to his new show.

Forgive me if this is something everyone knows already, but he does a weekly podcast with Andy Zaltzmann called The Bugle - very funny indeed and free on iTunes.

MiM

I’m not sure what he was saying either. Most of them - Ed Helms and Rob Corddry and Rob Riggle and a lot of other people - are gone when they’re gone. I think Carell has reprised Produce Pete Steve Carell twice, but he left the show eight years ago. It’s not like he’s still doing field pieces for them. They still do stuff with Colbert semi-regularly, but he’s the exception since he’s still on Comedy Central and the shows film near each other.

Brian Unger, Beth Littleford and Liz Winstead all seemed to have made clean breaks with the show and one of them created it.

It seems to me that The Daily Show has replaced SNL as the incubator for up-and-coming comedy actors.

I wouldn’t go that far. There are a number of former SNL cast members that left more recently than the successful former The Daily Show correspondents.

Maya Rudolph left SNL in 2011.
Amy Poehler left in 2010.
Kristen Wiig left in 2012.
Andy Samberg left in 2012.

I’m not saying they are necessarily bigger stars than former TDS correspondents, but SNL clearly still incubates lesser-known comedians into well-known comedians. In other words, both seem to be incubating quite a bit of talent (or at least success).

Cool cool cool. Didn’t they have a throw-away line in an episode last season about “Has anyone seen Prof. Duncan lately?”

I suck with names but Riggle I recognize and can put the name to face and he’s definitely been back a few times since 2008. And that wikipedia entry I don’t think is up to date since I’m almost positive he made an appearance this past year as well. I think it was during Oliver’s final guest hosting broadcast.

They did, I remember that. It gave me hope if they got another season, he might be back for an episode or two. Hearing at least 6 was great news.

I think Riggle has made two cameos in five years. It’s not like he or Carell is back every other week or even every few months.
