I will happily donate $20 for the operation of this site. Of course, I will only part with my money when it has been determined what exactly we’re buying, who’s getting our cash, etc.

And iampunha and Crunchy Frog - thank you both for bumping this back up. I fear that this effort has slowed quite a bit, or is languishing. We are only 1/6 of the way now to the arbitrary goal of $15,000, and now we’re getting people coming out and posting they don’t want to give to a profit company (never mind that no profit is made from this Board, however) or that they actually do not want to make the Board more accessable, appearing to say that by allowing it to be slow, this will keep the community manageable…right.
Whatever, it’s their opinion. It would be really nice if we had a larger quantity of even small donations, but the big ones have certainly helped the effort most thus far. I was expecting several hundred $5 pledges, but instead am seeing very few.
Well, for better or for worse, this effort will give valuable information to TubaDiva and the rest of the Straight Dope Staff - which was my intent all along, as per the OP. I hope everyone sees this effort and this thread not as some cheap, grandstanding thing, but as an honest effort to try and help out here.
Please, if you can encourage anyone else, see if we can get some more pledges so we can get the most accurate estimate possible.
