Jojoba Oil?

This stuff was promoted as a miracle product in the 1970s-it was supposed to cure baldness, make your skin young, etc. it was even promoted as a possible substitute for transmission oil. It was made from a desert plant, and could be grown anywhere…what happened to it?

It’s still around.

My store sells the pure stuff in the “ethnic” hair care aisle (basically, black people hair care aisle). It’s also in a fair number of shampoos, conditioners, lotions, creams, and the like. Most of these seem marketed at women, or more specifically black women in some cases.

Right now argan oil seems very trendy, I think the hype around argan has largely replaced the hype over jojoba.

I have a bottle of it around here somewhere. It’s popular for people with beards. In fact How It’s Made did a special on it a few years ago.

Sidenote, contrary to what you might guess, it’s pronounced with the accent on the second syllable. hoHOba.

I’ve managed to stabilize my hair loss (began late 20’s-I’m 53 now) by religiously using the stuff. FWIW.
