–nm, @DSeid just said it better.
A group of people I most definitely don’t hang around with. If this is your social group, no wonder you think people can’t laugh at themselves. Me, I have noticed no change in that ability over the last several decades.
So all lawyers are hell-bound because they are immoral, unethical, cheating?
Yeah, pretty much.
You might find that stereoptype funny.
I don’t.
Context mattered. That’s the point. Not trying to tell the joke here, even if the joke is well enough known that a partial punchline is ample. (24! You told it wrong.)
The flow was the preceding joke that went with a stereotype of my profession as arrogant and entitled (and some are and would benefit from being taken down a notch) and in a room that included my brother a lawyer whose opinion of many others in his profession is often disparaging. Most lawyer jokes I’ve heard have been told by him. Along with a few he tells making fun of doctors to rib me. (Though not my favorite about the group of doctors who go duck hunting … but another time …)
You must have really hated Community though. Let alone of the character Saul Goodman …
Seriously my ignorance is reduced here. I never thought of lawyer jokes as any more threatening than doctor jokes. Neither stereotype is really believed to represent any more than a few of their respective professions and both are overall held to be educated professions and thought of by society at large with some level of respect, deserved or not. (And of course for both reality of what is deserved varies.)
Although maybe if I had to live with “First we kill all the doctors …” being a famous quote I’d feel differently? Dunno.
I’ve not heard doctor jokes. Do they have a constant theme that doctors are morally bankrupt, ethically challenged, crooks? Because that’s what I hear in lawyer jokes.
“The doctor told me that I’d be back on my feet in a couple of weeks.”
“Well, were you?”
“Yeah. I had to sell my car to pay his bill.”
That’s a comment on US healthcare, not a statement about immoral doctors.
And how many lawyer jokes are commentary on the state of the legal system in the US?
Yeah, but that’s the whole thing. I’m of Polish heritage and a lawyer, and I enjoy Polish and lawyer jokes. But I guess I’m not being victimized or anything, because tellers would be “punching up” at me as a privileged white guy. But if I tell a joke about a Jew, or a woman, that has to be judged in some historical/cultural context.
I’ll keep telling whatever jokes I wish to tell in whatever jokes I feel like it. I’ll just self censor around here. And folk I don’t care about will likely form judgments about me. That’s fine.
Sad face
I still don’t geddit, whether the kid’s name is Johnny, Bobby, or Aloysius.
More often they focus on arrogance and hubris as the stereotype. Sometimes greed. Six months to live. Can’t pay your bill by then. Okay you got a year. You’re experiencing memory loss. Pay me today. Sometimes specific specialties’ foibles (best told between specialties) …
How do you tell apart the surgeon and the internist at the elevator? Door closing and the internist puts out his hand. The surgeon his head.
The doctors who go duck hunting together has various versions depend on which specialty is emphasized to be made fun of. It almost always includes a surgeon using more gun than needed and not knowing what he was shooting at.
Me, I only know of two lawyer jokes both very old and I already referenced both of them. Honestly I’d bet today’s lawyer jokes are more centered on the anxiety about finding a job in the field. Something like after building up lots of law school debt the lawyer realized that to make it they’d need a specialty. That’s why now they’re the best there is at pouring a flat white! Well not that but something like that created by someone better at jokes than I am!
The ones that stick with me don’t normally have any comment on the legal system, but suggest lawyers are rapacious, dishonest, etc, like the shark one mentioned upthread. Nothing to do with the legal system, but the assumed lack of character of all lawyers.
And then there’s the ones that just slag lawyers as despicable:
“What do you call a hundred lawyers drowned at the bottom of the sea?”
“A good start.”
So, I should be killed because of my profession. Funee!
If your database has poor security, entering the boy’s name will cause it to drop (delete) the table named “students”, so yes, the boy broke something (the schools database).
It’s kinda a geeky joke.
I think that’s an understatement.
Mind you, all of XKCD’s humour is geeky.
You’re taking things way too seriously. In any event, you chose to become a lawyer, warts and all. It wasn’t something that was thrust upon you. So yeah, your profession is fair game for jokes, even mean ones.
This is a variant on “why can’t you just take a joke !”, which is the standard challenge used to anyone who objects to a joke as perpetuating stereotypes.
Believer i t or not, some people go to law school because they want to further social changes and eliminate stereotypes, not just live in a world where “suck it up” is the standard answer.
