Just watched his show and damn does he make conservatives look dumb. Does it better than anybody else.
Their takedown of Fox News hypocrisy vis-a-vis protesters tonight was a tour de force.
Could the title of this thread perhaps be changed? I thought at first that Stewart was literally afflicted with an illness, and I suspect many others will as well.
Yeah, when I saw the title, my first thought was “Oh no! What’s happened to Jon Stewart?”
Actually, I thought it was going to be something like, “Jon Stewart is a sick man, he made fun of Sarah Palin’s down syndrome baby!”
Did you see his editing of Glenn Beck’s “America has the best health care in the world!” screeds with Beck’s “Health care in America is a national disgrace!” series (not just one segment) just last year? Also great. I wonder if Beck has responded.
I think Beck is a tad too savvy to get into a pissing match with Stewart. That or FOX has a standing gag order to not mention TDS or Colbert, which I think is more likely. The two people who’ve risen most to Stewart’s bait are Scarborough from MSNBC and Jim Cramer from CNBC, even though Stewart’s easily attacked FOX more often than either of them.
The last thing FOX would want to do is let their common taters get into a fight with outside sources, as they clearly don’t want to approach anything resembling a debate where they’d have to stray outside their talking points. That, and no matter how right you think you are or even may be, jesters will take you apart if you give them a reason to.
Shouldn’t it be Jon Stewart is SLICK?
I think he is good, but do remember having his own show he picks the battles he fights, I agree with most of what he says, but I could take him down on his points quitel easily as could anyone familiar with rules of debate.
Stewarts fine for entertainment but just remember when you can pick and choose what you want and ignore everything else that refutes what you say, it’s easy to come off as slick or good.
Take the View for instance, if you have an open mind, you can see Elisabeth Hasselbeck, often makes really good points, but she has no mental capacity to back up her statements, so when she tries to defend them she comes off looking stupid, even though she’s correct.
I’m not knocking Stewart personally, as I said, I agree with most of his opinions but just remember that about entertainers in general.
I think you overestimate your own competence, or at the very least underestimate Stewart’s.
What I think is funny is that when Stewart is mentioned by the Fox crew or their supporters he’s usually cited as just an entertainer in spite of the fact that his William & Mary psychology degree trumps the education of Glenn Beck (took one college course at Yale- that in his 30s- no grade), Sean Hannity (college dropout), Shepard Smith (college dropout), Rush Limbaugh (college dropout), and most of the other people he skewers and he has just as much experience in politics and leadership. Bill O’Reilly is one of the few well educated of the multimillionaire braying asses; most of them are quite anti-intellectual (trustfund git Tucker Carlson for example referring to college as a complete waste of four years and Limbaugh making light of the fact he failed everything including dance during his two semesters).
I’d be interested to know if you could flesh this out a little and give an example or two of what you mean or how she should respond (not necessarily literal samples taken from the show but just examples of the kind of thing you mean). Of the (very few) times I’ve seen The View, Hasselbeck gets laughed at/made fun of/attacked by the others immediately whenever she scores a point and can scarcely get a word in edgewise afterward. She has seemed to me to just let it drop rather than get into what would appear to be a shoutfest with the others.
Nit, but Stewart doesn’t edit the content of the Daily Show. But he is still awesome.
Yeah, I think the current lead writers are actually Oliver and Cenac, but don’t quote me on that.
Not too familiar with the show, but I was under the impression that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is the View’s Alan Colmes.
I changed the thread title to “SICK!” from “sick” to reduce confusion.
The Fox news bit from last night is the best work TDS has done in months - probably since the Cramer/Rick Santelli, maybe since last year.
Yeah, but now folks are going to think he’s not just sick (out for a week with yak-tongue), but SICK! EMERGENCY! READ THIS THREAD BEFORE HE’S GONE!!!1!!11ONEONEONE
Man, can’t please everyone, can you?
I just loved his showing of Barney Frank’s reply to the woman who asked the Nazi question. These people are crazy. I’m sure there is fallout and sure, Barney was rude, but it sure felt good to finally (finally!) have a Dem pay these nuts back in their own coin. If only he could have done it to no Ms Random American but to one of the “pundits” on Fox.
Well, isn’t Fox News also entertainment? There’s a reason why they call it “RECREATIONAL outrage.” A lot of people really enjoy saying that the country is going to pot, and that the left is out of hand. Underneath it all, it’s not about their concern for the country; it’s just a way to pass the time. The only difference is that The Daily Show says, “Look how stupid they are, and they’re in power. This is so funny it’s bad.” The people who believe Fox News, etc., say, “Oh, it’s terrible that the country and world are in this condition. Isn’t it fun to be the only person who is morally correct?”
Now that the Republicans no longer have power Stewart’s schtick seems a little lame. The most effective (and dangerous) satire is always that directed at those with power over us. The Dems have power now and yet Stewart still, week after week, launches himself at the Right. Sure, it’s amusing, but now it also seems safe and cosy.
I could be wrong. Maybe he still has teeth to go after the follies of those in power. Or maybe he’ll just turn into the Government’s attack dog. We’ll see.
