Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Elvis

Did anybody else see this miniseries?
I didn’t watch it all, but I had a major problem buying JRM as the King- he looked like he was going to a costume party as Elvis and gave a passable-for-Junior-College Presley accent, but I was amazed he was the best they could come up with.

OTOH, I thought that Randy Quaid’s Colonel Tom Parker was the best work he’s done in many years (particularly the way he merged the accent of West Virginia “good ol’ boy” barker with the Dutch accent of Andreas Cornelius Van Kuijk [Parker’s birth-name]). Their scenes together were far more dramatic and tense and the relationship far more complex than his scenes with his mother, Priscilla or anybody else. (It posed but didn’t answer the question of “Was Col. Tom the best or worst thing that happened to Elvis?”)

I thought you meant Johnathan Rhys-Davies… boy, that’s an image that’s gonna be hard to get rid of…

I thought this wasn’t on until this weekend?

Shite!!!

My Dad will kill me, he wanted me to record it and send it to him in Dublin.

I think he’ll play him in the sequel (the “fat in the 70s dead on a toilet” years).

There’s an Elvis by the Presleys special on this weekend (Priscilla, Lisa Marie, footage of Vernon and Minnie and Gladys et al).

“Indy… why do my hips move?”

I have it on DVR and might (not sure) burn it to DVD for future viewing as I don’t have time to see it in the next few weeks. I will probably put the entire 4 hours on one disc. If I do, after I watch it I can send you the DVD+R copy, if that will work for him over there.

“Ah always knew you’d turn on me, you ungrateful Hillbillah!” Oh yeah, Randy Quaid rocked as Col. Tom Parker! But I also thought that JRM did a great job as Elvis. Kurt Russell will always be my favorite Elvis, though.

It felt like they just barely skimmed the surface, plus they ended it at the 1968 “comeback” special - completely skipping the last nine years of Elvis’ life!!! Still enjoyed it overall - great performance by Quaid and very good by JRM.
