I was reminded in the Pit that I didn’t quite, ah, get this soda. All I know is that they have (had?) this photo-on-the-box contest and premium flavors to match the prices, and no caffeine that I recall. yet it sems to have taken off in that under-the-radar, hep way.
As far as I can tell, its just a successful marketing ploy. The sodas are certainly unremarkable. And from what I hear, you should never get the turkey and gravy flavor.
What about it do you need to “get”? Or am I misunderstanding this, and you mean you don’t… uh… get the soda, like at the store? Or both? (Did any of that make sense? :o )
Here is their webpage, to start, I suppose. They’re awesome. They have many cool, different flavours. The photo contests are just photos submitted from all kinds of people, and they go on the bottles. No caffiene, I don’t think, but they don’t make too many cola-type drinks. Some, but I don’t know if they have caffiene in them or not.
I don’t know if they’re “cool”. I just like them very much. They’re delicious. Except turkey and gravy…
These showed up at the local railway station around four years ago when I was living in Oakville. Interesting and unusual flavours and glass bottles… so of course they got attention. They had vanilla cola before Coke or Pepsi did in the Toronto area.
Haven’t tried the turkey and gravy flavour though.
As far as getting—well, I mean, I understand Coca-Cola started off as a medicinal tonic, Dr Pepper as something like what we kids used to call ‘suicides’, etc. I guess I see no apparent history or roots with Jones and co.
Uh, that’s kind of a sloppy post up there, pay it little mind, please…
It’s just something that flew over my head—it seemed like everywhere I saw it referenced, there was this aura as if it was “the thing to drink”. Marketing sounds like a good excuse.
Hmm, don’t know why, but it is indeed fashionable. A bit pricey, though, as I seem to recall. I believe they also have fortune-cookie-style fortunes under the bottle cap and have some spiel about how they love the environment and encourage recycling. The turkey-and-gravy thing is a seasonal Thanksgiving flavor/gimmick, I believe. I’ve only tried their green apple soda, which I would recommend as worth a try (only drink quite cold, never lukewarm)–it reminds me a bit of vinegar sometimes, though, so caveat emptor!
Psst… that’s so you can “Open up a can of Whoopass” on someone. It made more sense when the saying was still in style. Now it’s just kind of old, and silly.
Dave is a green tea of some sort, if you read the bottle itself it will tell you the flavour. I think it’s green tea with hemp. I would assume the hemp is the reason it’s called Dave. Because, you know. Dave’s not here, man.
Oh yeah, I like the watermelon, fufu berry, blue bubblegum, orange and cream, crushed melon, blueberry, and strawberry-lime flavoured sodas. I just can’t seem to find too many of those flavours anywhere else - or at least not all in one convenient place. I don’t find them pricey at all, the last one I bought was $1.10 US. I’m sure it will vary from store to store, though.
That simply can’t be the story behind the name, can it? Because, it’s so obvious it’s moronic. I’d like to think they had a bit more panache. I could easily be wrong.
My local Super Target sells the 4-packs of bottles for something like $4, and also 12-packs of cans (first time I’ve ever seen Jones in cans) for around the same.
Yeah, I don’t see what’s not to get. I mean, maybe it’s trendy (but it’s been pretty ubiquitous for some time now, so I’m guessing if it was trendy it’s worn off by now) but I just enjoy many of the flavors. There’s a lemon flavor that tastes just like carbonated lemonade. Wonderful! If other brands of pop sold that, or blueberry, or watermelon - well, I’d like those just as well.
I always want to buy Jone’s soda, but I never do. I guess it’s because it’s expensive and it has so much sugar/calories in it. I can’t justify that kind of consumption very often. And you know the diet kind wouldn’t be as good.
I don’t know though, if I ever see Blueberry, I might have to break down and try it. That sounds fab.
Jones Soda was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia about a decade ago, IIRC, and moved their base of operations to Washington State about five years ago because they got a better tax deal.
The whole idea behind their product line was to fit right into the whole 90s-Swingers-retro stuff going on, hence the retro-style flavours, without creating a whole bunch of new flavours that make it impossible to find the stuff your consumers actually buy.
