Joss Wheadon speaks! BtVS S.7 Horrors explained!

FilmForce has made a good, albeit somewhat meek, interview with Wheadon. It’s very long and deals in large parts with his upbringing, youth and general background.

There are hints about things not working out so well with SMG:

The thing about the nonsense? [Freddie Prinze Jr] was quoted as saying, “Sarah had to deal with a lot of nonsense,” and I was like, “Okay, Fred. I never saw you on set, so I’m not really sure what you’re referring to, but bless ya. Bless ya. By the way, I still know what you did last summer, buddy.”

I haven’t found the interview with FP to which JW refers.

He really likes Alyson Hannigan:

My one biggest priority of the show is that Aly becomes a sex symbol, and now she has – so I’m very happy about that.

About season 7:

I think the flaw of the season for me was that we were so clearly focused on what we wanted to do at the end of the season that we had to sort of get to it in a lot of episodes. <snip> Also, when you’re dealing with potentials, you have huge guest casts. <snip> But I had to get the potentials in there.

About the scoobies not being center stage:

You’ve been dealing with your core characters for seven years. It’s kind of hard. You know their tricks, you know their strengths and weaknesses, and you’re trying to drum up a new thing for them to go through, you know, a new thing for them to express, and it’s harder. It’s just harder.

About Kennedy:

Kennedy is, as she herself said, a bit of a brat. What I wanted was an anti-Tara. <snip> What I was interested in was Willow’s guilt, that her life could go on, that her love life could go on after Tara, because that’s a part of living. Quite frankly, that was not plan A. Plan A was to bring Tara back. <snip> I had a whole show figured out that ended with the return of Tara. I used to cry every time I pitched it. It was going to be Tara’s her one true love, people are going to be blown away, they’ll never see it coming – except on the Internet – and it’s going to be just about the biggest thing. Quite frankly, Amber just didn’t want to do it – which is her decision.

From context, he’s not refering to CWDP.

About Giles not touching stuff:

JW: It was just us having fun.

Interviewer: It didn’t seem to really pan out besides making a lot of people crazy on the Internet…

JW: That was just a fun runner for the diehards, so you watch every episode and you’re like, “AH! You’re right, he leaned on it, but he didn’t touch it!” It was just us having a little mystery fun.

I’m pretty sure the “conflict” between the actors was SMG vs the rest of the cast. I’m shocked by some of the comments that have been made and hints dropped. For example, James is always very complimentary of Sarah in interviews and Q&As…since March he hasn’t mentioned her at all. He pointedly avoids saying anything. You kow the adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say…”

ASH and um…the guy who played Ethan Rayne were doing a Q&A at the Harvest Con in London when someone asked who was the best person to work with. ASH said “Sarah” and they both started laughing like it was the funniest line in the world.

EC has never had a good word to say about her.

David Fury made it a point to compliment every main actor in LMPTM, except Sarah. James was great, ASH was great, Woodside was great…um…the star of the show didn’t even merit a mention. He also joked and laughed about Scooby-Doo as though it was the funniest thing he had ever heard. My favorite though was when he discussed directing “Gone” and he said he was really excited, but that certain people wre like “Can I get out of here by 2, I have a hair appointment”…

Anyway, there are more examples, but since the series has finishes shooting, I’m getting the impression that SMG was not the easiest person to work with.

As for FJPs comment about SMG and Joss…well, I can’t find the link, but I did read them. They were extremely unprofessional and inappropriate. I hope that SMG laid into him when he got home, because he was mouthing off…

Joss doesn’t like the spoiler people, which is too bad. Oh well, won’t keep me up at nights. He did say we should write fanfic though! So see, all those hours I write fic, I’m doing God’s…er Joss’s…work.
