Yep. Went in with low expectations and a grain of salt and had a fun time. Probably pointless to see it if you aren’t seeing it in 3D. Ridiculous plot of course, but that’s the point. Was slightly surprised that
I read Verne’s book when I was eight, & saw the movie when I was 10 or so. I remember two things: (1) my imagination got me through the book. My eight-year-old-girl-self was down there with the explorers as they fought their ways through their adventures. It was thrilling.
The movie? The guys were cute; the women (girls?) wore lots of lipstick (I remember lots of red lips on the females). The guys got to do all the fun, adventurous stuff. The women screamed & got rescued a lot.
But I expected cheap-shot 3D scares, dodgy science and a predictable plot!
The cinema was packed and I think everyone enjoyed it as a fun piece of nonsense.
My main complaint was that Gertrude the duck wasn’t in it, and her replacement glow-in-the-dark bluebird was pretty annoying! And the magnetic rock scene was just absurd!
They obviously expect a pretty young audience as the adverts were all for children’s tv shows and the trailers were all for animated kids films.
Well it is not a film of the book, but rather a film inspired by the book, taking place today. So just go and have fun. It is strictly a fluffy 3D escape movie.
Think of it as a theme-park ride, instead of a movie. Just leave your brain at the door and enjoy the ride.
They “break the fourth wall” several times, having objects leap off the screen and almost to the viewer’s nose. The director was basically saying “Hey everybody! Look what I can do with 3D effects!”
Fortunately, most of these stunts were entertaining.
Unfortunately, none of them involved any nudity.
