Jpeg resolution question

Ok, I think I screwed up.

I just got this fancy little digital camera. Last weekend I took a couple of pictures at the family Easter gathering, and then posted them on the web.

Everyone loved being able to see the pictures. So when I was at another family gathering yesterday, I took a ton of photos.

Except…that in the meantime I had gone out and bought a bigger memory card for my camera. Impressed with the technology at my fingertips, I promptly started taking all the pictures in the the highest resolution.

So now I can’t get them up on photopoint.com, and everybody is already e-mailing me to find out when the pictures are going up:)

The original files were all in the 100kb range, and the new ones are in the 800-900kb range.

Does anyone know how I drop the resolution so that I can get them online?

Open them in a photo editing program, then save as at a lower resolution.

Cornflakes has it right. You want to save a COPY of your original file at a lower resolution. As an alternative you could leave the resolution the same and increase the compression (lower the quality) of the file. Keep the original files unchanged because these are the ones to use for printing.

The technique varies from program to program, but use File/Save As, then look for Options or Advanced. There is usually a slider or box to vary the quality/file size.

If you choose to change the resolution instead, or do both, look under image resize or something similar.

As long as you keep the original file, you can always start over if you don’t like the results.

Just so you know, the resolution that the web can handle (and display your images at their original display measurements) is 72dpi. When the resolution gets about that, the web simply displays the pictures to look physically larger. Like the others have said, experiment to get the photos to display correctly, and work and keeping the resolution down.

Good luck!
