I swear I don’t watch these often, but my wife does and I sometimes get collateral damage.
That said, a kid on Judge Mathis last night STABBED another kid, and then countersued the kid he stabbed for money lost from losing his job when he went to jail.
Court shows are my secret love. I like Divorce Court (I miss Judge Maybeline) and love Judge Milian. But I really love Judge Alex. I think he’s carved out of wax. And when they play the opening, I picture him superimposed over the screen in black and white wearing the old Superman outfit.
So does that mean she really has no legal power over the plantiff and defendant, and that they can tell her to shut the fuck up? At the risk of losing their case of course.
I guess that’s what we don’t see on the episodes we broadcast.
Thats what I’ve always wondered. Although everone’s probably so confident in their case that they figure she’ll spend all her time insulting the other side. I’ll bet we can all think of at least one person whom we’d like to see Judy rip to shreds.
She does have legal standing. She can’t send them to jail or anything but since it’s a civil cast that isn’t a factor anyway. The “contestants” waive their right to a trial and agree to do whatever she says. It’s a legal contract.
These are probably the same folks who agree to sign a release and appear on COPS.
My mother likes watching Judge Judy. I think she appeals to my mother’s sense of common sense and justice. Me? I could take her or leave her. It seems to me though, that as the show has aged, the litigants picked seem dumber. Maybe the herd is thinning.
Not quite “whatever” she says. At least once, her decision was overturned by a real court. Judge Judy issued an “order” that purported to modify the custody arrangement a divorcing couple had. The actual cognizant family court noted acerbicaly that Judge Judy had no authority to modify a custody decision, nor did the husband and wife have the ability to surrender such decisions to her; custody decisions are driven by the interests of the child, and any contract that sought to lock in such a decision would be void as against public policy.
I love when she rips the “bad guy.” But too often I see her actually making fun of people who are obviously “a sammich short of a picnic.” That mean streak in her is very unpleasant. And yet I continue to watch…
Correct. Hubby Jerry Sheindlin for a time presided over “The People’s Court”, following on from former New York Mayor Ed Koch, and just prior to Marilyn’s stint.
Not a lawyer, of course, but of the various court shows, “The People’s Court” seems to be the only one that resembles an actual US small-claims court proceeding. Judge Judy is an unbearably shrill harpy, seems to completely ignore normal procedure, and I avoid her show completely.
Judge Judy is so very unfair! She will NOT yell at these things:
1)men wearing earrings! Earrings look STUPID on men! Earrings are for girls!
2)unmarried people making sex! Sex is ONLY for married people!
3)body piercing other than earring on girls
People can come in with half-dressed shirts. Judge Judy tells them to leave & come back with proper attire. She will NOT yell at people for body piercing & tell them to remove them in court. If I were a Judge, I’d complain about this. Both are IMAGE! People body pierce because of an ego hung-up & they want to fit in. And GOD does NOT like us alternating our body! We should NOT body pierce & smoke!
Damn, I was hoping this was a new Judge Judy thread. We got to discussing her in the Nancy Grace {spits} thread, and I’m all set to discuss her show now.
I dunno. The exclamation points certainly convince me.
I will remember, if I am ever invited to JohnSignore’s house for a cook out or something, to not wear an earring.
