Judge's Role in "Presumed Innocent"

If you saw this movie, does a judge have so much control over the course of a case as it unfolds? I mean, to the point where the judge is calling council into his chamber second-guessing what’s coming next? This just seems a bit out of protocol and almost having a biased position towards this case presented before him. In reality, doesn’t the judge more-or-less “referee” the attys (in a criminal case)? - Jinx

I’ve never seen the movie, so I can’t tell you exactly what’s what or if anything presented is fragranly foul, but…it’s not entirely unusual for a judge to call the attorneys (BOTH attorneys) into chambers to discuss the case if he needs to go over matters that would take too long to cover in a bench conference, what they call an “in camera” hearing. This will typically be whether or not evidence that is about to be presented will be admissible.

And since the judge is crooked to boot, it’s not that unusual.
