Jukebox Fury

With many pub jukeboxes, if no-one puts any money in, then every ten minutes or so a tune will be automatically played. Now it seems to me that these free ‘filler’ tunes are very often grating and ghastly enough to persuade me to invest in five of my own choosing.

Does anyone know whether the ‘filler’ tunes are selected for their irritation factor to encourage sales? Can the landlord select filler tunes; tailor them to cause disgust amongst their clientele?

I know it may be just be that I only notice them when they are especially repellent, but I can’t ever recall a Great Pool Tune coming on without payment…

I asked the manager of my local Buffalo Wild Wings, and he claims they’re set at “random”.

The one used at this bar and grill really piss me off, so I don’t throw any money in there.

1st, they tell you “3 Songs for a Dollar”. Okay, so you give the damn thing a buck and choose two songs, but what one doesn’t know is that the third song sometimes won’t fit, because it’s 50 cents more .

The other way they get you is “for a quarter more, we’ll play your selection next!”

What’s up with that? Just let me put in a buck, choose three songs, and let me get back to my girl and my brew! I’m not gonna stand there and negotiate with a goddam machine , fer Chrissakes!!!

Oh but he would say that, wouldn’t he?!? I feel they may be ‘randomly’ selected, maybe from the pool of least played songs in the venue - then they could be guaranteed unpopular.

And this seems to be entirely against pub spirit - isn’t part of the joy the ability to wipe away the memory of someone else’s Meatloaf with your Stones?

Point taken. I just hate to have to keep chunking in quarters when they’re just used to block the next song and are not going toward the purchase of one of mine!

Also, I have to tell you that your nick is one of my top ten juke box tunes, followed by “Matilda” by Cookie and The Cupcakes.

Thanks for a pleasant “earworm”! Lloyd Price was one of my faves!

Sorry, you misunderstand - I would never pay to erase someone else’s choice - everyone should have to suffer their choice for the duration, if only to make your own choice even better in comparison.
