Perhaps if they quit demanding racism and discrimination, it wouldn’t keep happening?
Thank you. Perfectly said.
Really, fuck that. How about, if it stops happening, they will quit calling it out. God, I am tired of people saying racism is the fault of its subjects.
Went to Walmart today, which is bad enough on its own. Got home and realized I had left some of my stuff at the check stand. :smack: Shit. Now I have to go to WM twice in one day. I try not to ever go more than once a month, if that. The worst part is it was just a cheap pair of gym shorts, right on the line between “worth going back to WM” and “not worth the trip” for me.

Which, of course, I didn’t say. However, black folks have demanded all sorts of things simply because they are black, which tends to foster racism. Perhaps if they started seeing themselves as Americans instead of Afro-Americans, and perhaps if they began to realize they aren’t the only “oppressed minority”, things would improve?
God, I am tired of people saying racism is the fault of only one side.

Others will do this better than I, but I feel obliged to say that your grasp of history is, shall we say, wrong.
In this country, who was subject to being slaves? Black people. Who was subject to Jim Crow for another 100 years? Black people. Who (among others) has been and is still subject to institutional racism, from policing to housing to education to access to health care, to access to decent food, and so on and on? Black people. Whose neighborhoods have been dumping grounds for cancer-inducing toxic chemicals? Black people. Who has been experimented on directly by the government, without their knowledge and consent? Black people. This is a very long list but that will do for a start. To be clear, by the way, this isn’t all history, much of it is still actively going on, not to mention all the lingering effects of that history.
On the other hand, what “all sorts of things” have black people demanded? The right to vote? Equal treatment under the law? Maybe, sometimes, some affirmative action to speed up the process of righting 350 years of horror? I have never heard a black person say they were the only oppressed minority (this country has a wonderfully diverse record on that score); but they certainly are an oppressed minority, an oppression which needs to change and to be redressed.
Anyway, thank you for your post. I now have a much better sense of who you are.
Such as?
Ummm, curlyqueue, how is a serious discussion of racism a Mini-Rant?
This is more funny than a rant: I went to the grocery store to pick up a few things, including a birthday card. The bagger asks me if I want the card in a bag. I say yes, thinking he’s going to put it in one of the other, already filled bags. He proceeds to put it in its very own bag and puts it in the cart with the others.
Really, dude? Oh well. I have cats, I can use another plastic bag. But really, dude?
Maybe he didn’t want the sweating carton of milk to get your card all wet? I think it’s nice when they put the card in its own bag.
I believe you are referring to the blacks in the poor communities.
There are others?? !!
Yeah, all they have to do is have a better attitude. Like Philando Castile, whose poor attitude got him pulled over 49 times and eventually shot. He should have just seen himself as an American and everything would be sunshine and roses.
Not going to say more here; let the mini-rants continue, unhijacked by me.
Yes there are middle class blacks and rich blacks in every state who don’t beg for things.
Whoa, things have gotten heavy for the mini-rant thread… (ETA: shortly after my neighbors moved in, they were stopped by the police who wanted to make sure they actually lived in this neighborhood. Yes, my neighbors are black…I don’t see how that stop was anything other than racism.)
Zucchini update: turns out zucchini blossoms come in male and female varieties…the male blossoms shrivel up and fall off the plant once they’ve done their thing. So nothing was getting to my zucchini vines after all.
Did some quick weed whacking this weekend wearing sandals.
Every year I weed whack once in sandals and I get poison ivy all over the tops of my feet. I’ll do it again next year.
Fuck.
A few years ago we planted a ton of zucchini for some reason. The blossoms are delicious!
I hadn’t bought anything like that. Mostly boxes of things. He looked like a high school kid with a Fisher Price My First Job ™, so I think that was it.
I helped my roommate pull some weeds in the side yard Sunday before last and got poison ivy all over my right arm. A week later and it’s finally drying up. I hadn’t touched that stuff in thirty years and hopefully it’ll be that long before I do it again.
A little over six months ago, my dad was discharged from the hospital into hospice care after contracting a massive case of c.diff at a rehab facility he’d been in because he’d been stupid about taking his Lasix for his congestive heart failure because it made him pee too frequently and it was inconvenient so his legs stopped working thanks to too much fluid and he had to go to the hospital.
Which isn’t the rant.
No, the rant is that the retirement community my parents live in have kicked out the nursing assistant company that probably saved his life to the point that last Monday he was discharged from hospice, and while they gave “reasons”, the real reason is because the woman who owns and runs the company has visible tattoos and a bit of a potty mouth and a lot of the residents and the facility manager don’t approve.
Mom was able to find a new company to help, but they won’t be able to provide the same level of care and Dad will basically not be able to leave their apartment to do anything at all. Mom is trying to find another company; if she can’t, or if she can but it’s too expensive, my Dad might wind up in an assisted living facility and Mom in an apartment which will make neither of them happy. Dad was pretty damned depressed before he was well enough to be moved out of bed for time in the living room or for other activities, and now he’s back to being bedridden and I’d just like to kick the asses of the managers because they’re more interested in how someone looks rather than how well they perform a job and really, they’re not people people so why are they managing a place like that to begin with?
<pants in rage>
Seriously, fuck these people. Neither of my parents should be having to worry about this sort of thing. I’d like to grab 'em by their throats and demand to know why they’re trying to kill my parents. I know that company was caring for about another 30 or so people in the facility. What are all these people supposed to do? The facility doesn’t provide this sort of assistance, so they’ve just put a LOT of customers in danger.
Was this someone you or your parents contracted with? I am no expert, but what business is it of theirs what company your parents use? Regardless, fuck them for having screwed up priorities. I’m sorry you are going through this and hope things get better fast.
He did exactly the right thing. He’s not paid to examine the contents of your bags, to determine whether there’s anything that might damage the card. It’s much faster and safer to put it into its own bag. That’s the way it’s always done.
They control access to the building. If she or someone else working for her company comes back, they can be charged with trespassing.
I’m not entirely certain of all the details; I do know that when I was out there, the company was the only one authorized to come in and do home care of that sort, but I have no idea how that was arranged in the first place or under what conditions.
I just wish there were something I can do, but they’re almost 3,000 miles away. I can’t just pop down for a weekend.
