June 9 Colbert opening: "8.5"

In every title sequence for The Colbert Report, there’s one moment – while he’s leaping through the air carrying an American flag pole – where a new and different phrase appears every week, or even every day.

It’s usually something that’s supposed to be timely and relevant, like “Eleven dark thirty” when Zero Dark Thirty came out in movie theaters. (Being a reference to the fact that the Colbert Report is on at 11:30 PM Eastern time.)

Well, on the June 9th episode, the text that appeared was:

8.5

What the heck was that in reference to?

Sure there was a decimal point? It was 99 a few weeks ago, and counting down by one each show. I suspect it’s the number of Colbert Report shows left.

Oh!

I could’ve sworn there was a decimal point. Comedy Central’s episode archive to the rescue!

You’re right, it WAS “85”, not “8.5”.

I mistook the gleam off the bottom-right corner of the 8 for a decimal point.

… and apparently, it was the June 10th episode, not the June 9th episode. (June 9th’s was “86”).

Huh. Something I never knew about, being a steadfast intro-skipper.

I thought he was a Fellini* fan

*Italian film director; one of his most famous films is 8 1/2

I skip the intros because I hate the chanting, and how he milks it. I used to think it was humorous, but now I detest it.
