Heloise I am not a troll. I discovered SDMD recently and thought it had many smart, kind and witty people whose company I would I would enjoy. I have started two other threads and was touched by the interesting and informative replies.

You may honestly believe money is being wasted on an AIDS vaccine - doesn’t make you any less ignorant. And we’re fighting ignorance here, not administering polygraphs.
I wonder at the reasoning that can condemn 40 million people to a slow wasting death. The key here is that people are looking ahead to the damage that HIV will cause in the next decade and trying to prevent it: why would anyone in their right mind want to argue against an AIDS vaccine? The flu does kill 20,000 a year, granted, but it’s a fairly stable casualty rate–as horrible as that sounds–and primarily strikes people with other health problems (i.e. the old, etc.) so we can manage its risks barring a return of the ‘super-flu’ epidemic which struck after WWI <crosses fingers and toes>. FWIW, the flu epidemic in 1919-20 killed roughly 20 million throughout the world–AIDS looks like it will double that number. I really don’t understand this argument.
This is just bewildering…

If you are not a troll, pluralgravity, then perhaps you were trying to make a point that I didn’t understand. From my gathering, you were saying that there is a disease that exists, that is epidemic, but that doesn’t deserve our attention because the people who have it and will get it deserve it. If you are attempting to say something else, please explain it to me and I will withdraw my statement. (not the one about francesca being hot, though.)

I don’t understand this attack at all. pluralgravity said nothing that the title says. He cleared up his seeming insensitivity towards Africans by stating that Africans should try to solve their problem themselves. What’s wrong with that? So he doesn’t look at Africans as a bunch of children that need to hold the West’s hand to get through life. They’re people just like us and solve problems in the same way, so how are we so superior? It’s been over 20 years and we’re nowhere near a cure, just an expensive way to stay alive longer and spread it to others. Maybe Africans can look at the disease in a totally innovative way and discover an approach that the West could never think of if we just let them and stop acting like the know-it-alls we’re not. And his comments about Western victims deserving it were obviously just borne out of ignorance of how it’s spread (he had the misconception that you have to have a risky sex life to catch the disease when that’s not true, you just have to come into contact with someone who does). Isn’t this board about fighting ignorance?
