Jury duty or work?

Jury duty. My employer still pays me plus I still get to keep any jury duty pay.

Work. It’s good to be self employed.

Work. In fact, I’ve done this, deferring jury duty until winter break or summer. Having a sub means basically my whole teaching schedule is thrown off, nothing meaningful gets done, AND I have to spend time setting up sub plans. Not worth it.

I was called for jury duty twice when I was working and went both times. Granted, I was a government employee so I got paid anyway.

When I was younger I’d pick jury duty. It was an adventure, and driving and parking downtown didn’t bother me.
I got called for jury duty a lot when I lived in Baltimore. I never made it to a trial though.

Now I’d pick work. I work from home.
Jury duty would mean actually having to get up early, get dressed, get out the door, be somewhere on time, drive in traffic, find a place to park, sit in a crowded room, be bored out of my mind, get a headache from being closed in and reading too much.
Been there, done that, seen the movie, heard the talk, toured the courthouse, multiple times.

Work.

I work I get paid, I don’t work, I don’t get paid.

Jury duty. Nice little vacation from work ( and usually fewer hours ) and like others I get paid either way.

I work five days a week, so jury duty. Our jury rooms have good wifi, and anyhow I can bring a book. When I got picked for a trial it was interesting.
I was up for jury duty last Thursday, at the courthouse near my home, but didn’t have to go. Though I worked from home in the morning since they wouldn’t say about afternoon reporting until 11 am, and I didn’t want to have to run back.
I get paid also.

I’ve gotten called for jury duty four times, and have served only once.

In each case, showing up at court for a day was a nuisance. Serving in an actual jury was not very interesting.

I had things to do at work, and would rather have been there.

Love jury duty.

Every jury I actually got on, I was ‘foreman.’

Amazingly enough, two of the times, the same people were in the pool that played bridge together before. We did not care if we got a case or not.

And you get to mess with lawyers heads. Triple fun when the judge likes you and helps you do it during voir dire…

YMMV

Jury Duty. I get to work about 2000 hours a year. Jury duty would give me the opportunity to do something different. I’ve had jury duty twice and enjoyed it.

Work.
Jury duty sucks, and the courts are just a boring circus sideshow. Bad clowns included.

Jury duty usually isn’t a single day unless you aren’t chosen.

This would drive my choice. That said, I’ve got projects with deadlines so if I were to be assigned to a long trial that was starting immediately, I’d report but ask for a deferral.

I actually did report and ask for a deferral once. They were selecting members for a six-month long grand jury that would be meeting once a week, starting the next week.

My employer pays me and because of that I’d be required to turn over the jury pay checks. There was a memo reminding employees about that last year. That only comes into play if you check the jury duty code on your time sheet. If you use the vacation code, you can keep it.

I’d have an easier time parking than most jurers. The court building is two blocks from where I work. I could park in my regular spot and walk with no problem.

You left out the part where you get paid the same either way option. Some companies do not compensate for jury duty and may get pissed if you go. Of course they won’t say that but they do have to get someone to fill in for you. My company will compensate, but it will be a pain in the ass.

Well, I get the day off and $10, party time!!! Doesn’t cut it for me.

Since I work a non-traditional shift with some nights and some days during the same week, the required activities of the ‘daylight’ people tend to piss me off. I already have to return to work for bullshit meetings a couple times a month. These are a treat to the daylight people, a break from their normal routine. For me it is returning to work for a couple hours, after working the whole night, and returning again to do my next shift.

Jury duty? That would screw up my whole week. If I don’t like the looks of you, you are guilty, fuck you, can I go home now? If I like you, the cops are lying bastards, can I go now?

Fortunately, even though I have lived in at the same address for most of my 50ish years and have always been a registered voter, I have never been called.

This.

Jury Duty. The city pays for my lunch and there’s a good restaurant across the street from the courthouse.

Wait, does the law require employer-paid jury leave?

There could be state laws to that effect somewhere, but there’s no federal requirement.

If you go jury, there’s always the small but non-zero chance you will get put on a trial that lasts for 9 months and you will be sequestered.

But there’s a better chance you’ll spend a lot of time sitting around, bored out of your skull.
