Just another reminder why I rarely listen to movie critics - Event Horizon, an awesome movie

I thought this movie was dissapointing mainly because it had so much potential. Great cast, great premise, a ship that dissapeared for years and nobody knew where? Sign me up! And there were some great visuals, and some really creepy scenes…

But it turned into just a gory gross out fic. The ship slipped into “a dimension pure evil.” That’s all the explaination we get? Oookay…

Well, how did it stand up to scifi guy once he saw it?

See, I liked that idea, that it took a dimensional jaunt to hell and returned possessed by demons: there is so much you could do with that idea, a haunted house in space that gradually takes over a salvage crew. But yeah, half-naked Sam Neill doesn’t really cut it as hell made flesh. Now if they had filmed it as The Keep in space, that would have been something worth seeing.

I really like Event Horizon - I think it’s great. Part of me loves loves loves how they didn’t go with someone getting impaled, which you really expect from a ship that’s all poky things. Seriously - the ship looks like the most dangerous ship ever conceived with all the spikes, yet no one gets impaled. I kept waiting for it, but it didn’t happen. So while it might have copped out elsewhere, it didn’t there.

Whoa. I don’t want to alarm you, but we might be the same person. This was exactly my experience. I saw it when it came out and was scared and shocked and blown away. Then I saw it years later with my wife (preparing her for an amazing experience) and realized it kind of sucked.

To this day, every time I recommend a movie for us to watch together that I’ve already seen and enjoyed, she’ll ask if I’m sure or if this is Event Horizon again.
