Bush supporters: Your guy won. That does not mean you won. Stop with the personal insults. You are being rude.
Kerry supporters: Your guy lost. That does not mean that the fate of the country is lost*. Stop with the wailing and rending of garments. You are being very poor sports.
*No, it really doesn’t. Bush is surrounded by smart people. And if you have more to say on the subject, confine it to GD or other Pit threads.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) Bush has driven me further and further to the left.
The thing is, Rilchiam, your OP is exactly the sort of thing I would have written four years ago. In a sea of liberals (when I lived overseas not a single one of my friends was a Republican), I was the only moderate Democrat there. When Bush won, I didn’t bitch or complain or claim the sky was falling. After all, one of the advantages of a two-party system is that it has to appeal to the center. Democrat or Republican, there can’t be too much deviance from the status quo. I tried my best to calm my friends’ Henny Penny tendencies.
However, the four years of Bush have proved to be one disappointment after another to me, and the administration has become far more insiduous and un-American than I thought possible. I truly believe it’s a morally bankrupt and corrupt administration, and it had more than a benefit of a doubt from me to begin with.
So forgive me if I’m a bit alarmed at the results.
I’m sure you are. But my OP was not directed at people who are “a bit alarmed”, It was directed at the people who are being just. plain. nasty. Even for the Pit, some people are going too far.
I think that would have been me. Yesterday I was in the “Let people rant” camp. Today, however, I’m more in the “Chill already” camp. I’ve eaten enough hateful rhetoric and I think I’m full already.
I am convinced that the only sane people left at the SDMB are currently posting in this thread.
I put up a post yesterday in another thread that essentially said the same thing Rilch did, and you’d have thought I believed the moon landing was a hoax.
Both sides could use an extra-strength dose of shut-the-hell-up.
Yesterday I had a student who was in a storming rage because she believed that Bush having won the election will mean that for the second time, she will get a degree and not a job. She was ‘fucking pissed off’ that he won, because that’s the only reason that she was unemployed after the 2000 election, and it will be the only reason she’s unemployed after graduating in March.
However, she fails to see her own responsibility in her status as unemployed. She is incapable of going more than 2 minutes 30 seconds without asking a question like ‘Is this the right font to use?’ or ‘Is this shade of blue OK?’ This is woman in her mid-twenties who can’t make a single decision for herself, like where to get gas, what courses to take, or whether Times New Roman is an acceptable font to use when writing an essay, without consulting someone else.
Count me in with the ‘get over the hysterical gloating and/or bitching, already.’ camp. The world will not end because your guy lost, nor will it be roses and sunishine because your guy won. We’re all just going to have to keep on trucking and live our daily lives.
Oh, and stop asking me questions every 2.5 minutes.
