But I’d value your opinion: I thought that Dr. Jack discovering the Scottish guy down in the hatch, whom he had met years before, implausible; and the non-explanation of why the guy has to “push the button” every 108 minutes downright silly. Does the series get better, or should I put my Blockbuster card to other uses?
Did you think the polar bear on a tropical island in season 1 was silly as well?
One of the things that LOST does is make the viewer ask many questions. These questions are not exactly answered in a prompt manner. If this is going to bother you, then LOST is not the show for you.
As a matter of fact, I think one of the things that draws people to the show is that it asks questions and that makes you want to tune in again to get answers to these questions.
Yeah, the polar bear was pretty silly, but I let it slide.
What I’m wondering at this point is if there really are answers or if they’re just making up stuff as they go along. From what Bootis says above, it sounds like the button plays a role and isn’t a half-baked mcguffin, so I guess I’ll keep on for another disk or two.
IF the writers have a plan in mind and aren’t just making stuff up as they go along (and have explainations and a resolution already pretty firmly planned) this will go down in history as awsome TV. If, however, they’re just pulling shit out of their asses and peters off, it’ll just be crap. The writers claim to have a plan.
The evidence of the current season suggests that they really do know the answers to most if not all of the questions they’ve raised. That said, if the OP finds the coincidence of Desmond and Jack implausible and the button silly, then the show maybe isn’t for him, because dude, there is some seriously weird shit down the line.
I think the show is great, and the real reason it’s great is because of how deeply it investigates the characters it presents. But by no means is it plausible.

If you are watching Lost and have problems with the implausible, Lost may not be the show for you, brother.
I will second that there’s some seriously strange stuff coming down the pike, but we are getting answers to a lot of it (including a semi-answer to the button / Desmond thing) at this point. I do believe the writers when they say they have a plan to it all, as it all started to come together once they worked out that firm end date with the network and they no longer had to stall.
I think it’s worth noting to the OP, however, that they have a season or so to go before they reach that point. If you think you’re going to be frustrated by a bunch of weird stuff with few or no answers during that time, you might want to read some spoilers for the next season or so, and pick up the DVDs again at the beginning of season 4.
FYI - Don’t know if you know this or not, Koxinga, but all of the episodes are availalbe on ABC’s website, and they’re even available in High Deffy goodness. That’s how I got started watching. Had a long layover in Houston, started watching season one, and have been hooked ever since.
