Behold, the newest creation from the producers of Terminator vs Robocop.
Seriously…this is actually quite moving.
Does anybody posting on YouTube ever get prosecuted for all the copyrighted material they use without permission?
ETA: No, it isn’t. Moving, that is.
I disagree: it was utterly boring. I only kept watching in case there was a joke or gotcha at the end. There wasn’t.
Seems like Youtube should be responsible since, unlike the people who post material, they are making a profit off of it.
Is this a whoosh?
Not to my knowledge, though a LOT of videos disappear and have a “no longer available” banner after a few days. Fremantle (the production company that owns American Idol) is the weirdest- they’ll remove 5 videos of, say, David Archuleta (one of this year’s finalists) singing whatever song he did the night before, but leave 20 more up and running, so I don’t know what their standards are.
I wish I knew more about copyright law, but I know that a lot of them claim fair use under “parody” laws. Not sure how much leeway this allows.
If Dolly Parton goes forward with her Howard Stern lawsuit, it might be an interesting precedent as far as parody is concerned. (For those uninterested in the link, Stern took selections from a Dolly Parton audio-book and by rearranging the words he had her trashing Linda Ronstadt and making graphic “revelations” about Kenny Rogers’ pedophilia with little boys the like. VERY EXPLICIT AND COULD NOT BE LESS SAFE FOR WORK AUDIOPHILE LINKED TO HERE.
Wasn’t it Jerry Falwell who’d’ve been able to dissuade Parton from wasting her time, if he was a little less dead?
Why? I guess I’m fairly ignorant of the subject, which is why I began my statement with “seems like.” That’s what makes sense to me; if I’m missing something, please enlighten me.
Seriously, just think about it: the burden should be on YouTube? Youtube should be required to provide lawyers and copyright searches etc. etc. etc. for every yoob who wants to post something on what’s essentially a public bulletin board? How could that possibly make sense?
so the world is going to end with an Armageddon trailer?
Stupid, stupid, video. Why do people think that by adding mournful music to something it somehow makes it deep? You can’t hide copyright violations with crappy music people!
So, wait, you’re saying Youtube should be able to profit from it, but not have any responsibility for it? The yoobs posting it don’t make any money from it, and I don’t think Youtube is required to give them a place to post it. Sounds like exactly what Napster got taken down for; do you apply your same argument to Napster?
Again, think about it. If you leased some land and put up a billboard, you should, what, not profit from publishing someone else’s message on it?
Again, all of this will become clear to you if you take a moment to indulge in some logic.
I’m not getting it. Explain to me how this is different from Napster getting taken down because its users used it to share copyrighted material.
That’s not why Napster was taken down. Napster was taken down because lawyers managed to convince a judge that Napster had no other use.
I declare this video…
LAME
Someone spliced together clips from various movies and whatnot, dubed the Score from Gladiator over it and basically created what amounts to a trailer for Civilization V.
Damn…you people are cold.
No, I’ve just got standards that aren’t met by stealing video and music from various movies and splicing them together. Some of the works referenced, were in themselves moving when I saw them in their entireties. If the “studio” that produced this video collage ever gets past their mental masturbation stage and produces something original, there’s a chance that might be moving. Probably not, though.
I don’t care if they’re stolen; collage is a perfectly valid artform. It was sentimental and lame. And BORING.
Was it? I slept through it.
