And next time, I’ll wait until the June gloom is gone before I go, because it was rather cold and windy most of the time.
However, my friend and I enjoyed our lodgings and even managed to get into the very warm pool for a couple of hours, twice. We lingered over breakfast, I went clothes-shopping (because I was a bit underdressed), pal went to look for antiques (I didn't; they give me the creeps), we both did the gift shops, spent three hours at the Mission, took a lot of photos, did the Los Rios historical district and a museum, went to the farmers' market, went to the coffee place twice, had delicious dinners at three restaurants, watched the boob tube at night in our rooms, caught some live music at a saloon one night, and enjoyed our Amtrak journey there and back. We wanted to see a play but we were there at the wrong time.
It was good to get away, just for a few nights.
I love San Juan Capistrano. Did you happen to eat at the Italian restaurant across from the mission? (can’t remember the name) It’s so yummy!
Glad you had a good trip. If you don’t want to risk any chance of gloom, then I suggest a trip to Palm Springs anytime between June and August! Actually, the past few days have been below normal temperature and just beautiful.
Well, Cedar Creek is the one across from the Mission but I don’t recall it being Italian. It is quite delicious, though. We also ate at Sarducci’s at the train depot and at El Adobe–both very nice as well.
kniz: Having just spent a week near Palm Springs (in Morongo Valley); I can safely say you’ve either lived there for a very long time, or you’re insane. When the temperature gets above 90 before noon in May, it’s too hot out. And Morongo is generally ~10 degrees cooler than Palm Springs.
Having said that, I will say that Palm Springs is very nice. I’d suggest going there anytime but the summer. And it did make me appreciate the weather up here that much more. Also, there is a way to visit Palm Springs relatively inexpensively: Get a motel room in Yucca Valley.
Seriously, I did look for swallows at the mission, since I hear they make their nests out of mud and there are plenty of little places where they could build them. But no such luck.
