Just got back from Yorkshire.

Apart from the death and funeral of the Pope, the Wedding of Charlie and Cam, and the UK elections, what have I missed in the dope world?

I went to Yorkshire for a week. Free week in a country cottage.

Visited Whitby bay (nice tallship and chippy), Robin Hood’s bay (steep little village. No idea why the name), Fountain Abbey (impressive, shame Henry VIII burned them all down), Castle Howard (Brideshead Revisited and Sense & Sensibility filmed there. Nice toff place but no photography allowed inside, not even non-flash. Spoilsports), York (Not like I remember it from childhood but still a cool place) including the Minster (should not have joined the guided tour though, very boring it was, not the minster I mean), Jorvic museum (WTF? Pile of shite. Why so famous?!), and an open-top bus tour (worthwhile).

Did not see… National Railway museum (possible nerd territory, and lack of time), York Museum to name but a few.

Took aproximately 3 gigabytes of photographs.
The Isle of Man is boring. I’m sad now :frowning:

Hmmmm, what happened?..

  • Cecil married a porn star

  • The Mornington Crescent Challenge Trophy was won by Bangladesh

  • Southern fish & chips became better than northern ones

  • The board ran quickly and smoothly at all times. (OK, that one’s just silly…)

Oh, and yes, Fountains is in just such a perfect setting, isn’t it? And yep, I would have told you to skip the Jorvic and do the railway museum instead. But then, there’s a bit of a railway geek inside me somewhere.

Because of the things I missed I intend to visit yorkshire again.

Oh, and I forgot to mention… Pheasants. They are everywhere! almost as common as pigeons. Before this trip to yorkshire I don’t think I’d seen more than one or two pheasants in my entire life. (maybe even none at all) I took a few pictures of some at fountains abbey. They are remarkably tolerant of human closeness considering we have a habit of shooting them out of the sky.

I went through my pictures using winxp’s slideshow feature. It’s amazing how quickly you can get through two gigs worth of pictures! There are maybe 5 that are desktop background worthy (from memory one from castle howard and one from fountains abbey)
p.s. on the way home we saw the aftermath of a motorway accident - a BMW Z3 with a bashed side. Two seconds later a cop whizzed past sirens flashing. The idiot had drove right past what he’d obviously been called to.

Not so long ago, the local news made a big fuss about pheasants, because they were actually selling in local butchers for less than bog-standard chickens. Funnily enough, the next time I went to the butcher, the pheasants were in prime position, with prime prices

(And goddamit get them pictures up & ready for us!)

I’ll upload the good ones tomorrow. Right now I’m having a well-deserved post-holiday drink.
(out of over three hundred there are about three that I am actually pleased with. I’ll upload those first)

I went to a fish restaurant in Whitby, then to Robin Hood’s bay last year for my aunt’s birthday, good fish and a nice place. Dogs loved it, although my cousins were very “Blah” I rather liked it.

I’ve always wanted to go to Yorkshire. I know someone there (though we’ve barely been in contact for over a decade). Anyway, my Tillotson ancestors were from there.

Just got back from Yorkshire

I was feelin’ 'bout half past dead…

Just needed a place,
Where I could lay my head…

I envy you on both the Yorkshire and the Isle of Man counts. Is not the Isle of Man a fabulous tax haven full of people like George MacDonald Fraser?

I miss Yorkshire. :frowning: I only lived there for 2 years (and that was 20 years ago), but I have many fond memories and have been wanting to return ever since my family came back to the States. I still have pictures of my brother and me at Fountains Abbey!

Thanks for sharing, Lobsang.

Lobsang, please tell me that, while in Whitby, you went to:

The Duke of York for the view
The Magpie Cafe for fish ‘n’ chips
The White Horse and Griffin for every other meal.

These things are important. I miss Whitby (got married there).

I were born in Yorkshire.

I wasn’t on my own. I was with some old folks (my mum, step-dad, and step-dad’s parents) so we couldn’t really get lots done in one day. (I suppose I could have gone off on my own but I didn’t think of that)

That is why I’d like to visit Yorkshire on my own some day. I’m pretty mobile on my feet and can spend a whole day walking if I want to.
(I did have fish’n’chips at whitby. Not sure what the name of the place was though. It was good eatin’. Across the road from the co-op)

P.S. Whitby was the one place we spent far too little time in. Not sure why but as soon as we’d had chippie we were off to Robin Hood’s Bay.

Here you go. (a selection)

I was going to move them into a public folder, but it warned me that all my links would then be broken, so I decided against that. Easier just to link to a message board that allows images.

If you’d like any of them full size (3264x2448) let me know. (here or e-mail me)

Some very nice pictures there, the second one now has pride of place as my desktop wallpaper. I’ve lived in Yorkshire all my life but have never been to some of the places you visited, I need to expand my horizons beyond the boundaries of Leeds a bit more I think!!

Did you have some pudding?

Ironically… No.

Is Yorkshire-Pudding any different/better in Yorkshire than it is in the entire northwest area of the British Isles where it is freely available?

If anything was enjoyed there which is not available here it’s Seabrook brand crinkle-cut plain crisps. I love’em.
