I meant “the concept (fallacy) of something being cursed or unlucky”. That has almost the opposite meaning of “bad luck” in the sense of mere chance occurrence.
I saw an article on this - is Syria supposed to be dangerous as well?
I was debating whether I should start a thread titled “What will happen to the next Malaysain airplane?” But I think I now have the answer to that question.
Syria is safer than the ukrainian conflict zone.
In Ukraine, the secessionists have both the tools (the high altitude antiaircraft missiles), and the motivation (Jumbos have the same profile as Kiev Loyalists military transports) to shoot down a jumbo.
In Syria, the Government faction has the SAM weaponry, but not the motivation to shoot down aircraft (as their enemies have none)
The Syrian rebels have the motivation to shoot down planes, but not the tools, stingers are way too short ranged.
Knowing how much Malaysia Airlines loves cutting corners, they’ll probably lose the next plane when they make a refueling stop in Modigishu, Somalia
Remember, though, that this plane was flying at the regular cruising altitude of about 33,000 feet and was shot down by a sophisticated anti-aircraft missile. Normally, one would expect a passenger jet at that altitude to be safe from attack.
Or it’ll run out of fuel about a hundred miles west of the Malaysian coast, because the home office was too cheap to pay for reserve fuel and the plane ran into an unexpected head wind.
Sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles that
Sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles that the secessionists regularly use against high flying (military) aircraft in the area.
The airline knew the risk before they took it. If they didn’t take it, those 300 people would still be alive.
That being said, Singapore Airlines was just 15 minutes behind MH17, and it is simply a matter of chance that MA was hit instead. That makes it terribly hypocritical to post tweets like “Customers may wish to note that Singapore Airlines flights are not using Ukraine airspace.”
Ya think?
For aircraft?
The Syrian insurgents are basically the same guys as the Iraqi insurgents. Do they have any SAM systems?
And it’s not like the Syrian government is the most responsible group around either.
Malaysian Airlines PR disaster has been cauterised, in the most horrible way possible.
Rest in Peace TransAsia GE222
Dunno, but I’d prefer not to fly over Syria and be surprised.
BBC TV is reporting that Malaysia Airlines just delisted from the country’s stock exchange. There’s speculation the government will take it over completely and maybe even rename it.
government will attempt to be buying it in total.
they own 70% and will attempt to buy the remainder.
There are plenty of other Malayan-based airlines, why do they need to keep the brand alive? National prestige?
Well, now we have the chief steward on a Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Paris accused of sexually assaulting a passenger.
EDIT: Also, almost 200 cabin crew have quit since the twin disasters.
Malaysia Airlines finally realises “Things you want to do before you die” is not the best way to promote themselves.
Personally I’m sad about this. Flew Malaysian a little while ago and it was an excellent airline.
