Why would a state that has full marriage equality even have, or need, the concept or institution of “domestic partnership”?

It’s a remnant of the days before we got full marriage equality. New York City began recognizing domestic partnerships in 1997. As a further reflection of the times, most of the benefits related to domestic partnership are reserved for people who work for the city, since I guess helping the partners of deceased cops and firefighters made the idea of recognizing some same-sex relationships more palatable. New York State got marriage equality in mid-2011. Despite the fact that many of the benefits are reserved for people who work for the city, we do get a couple of benefits in case of emergencies and we get to enjoy the fact that we’ve formalized our relationship somewhat while we wait for our rings to get made up and then hold off on getting engaged for a little while.
