And now that I’ve had time to really digest overall I’m happy with how it turned out. Keep in mind, I’ve been a Sonic the Hedgehog fan since the 16 bit era so my expectations were high going into this.
I really appreciated how grounded it felt. Everything that happened was rooted in reality and it didn’t feel cartoonish or silly. I’m surprised it wasn’t rated PG-13 in fact because the emotional scenes I felt hit hard. I didn’t see a dry eye in the theater during that scene.
I’m curious how they introduce metal Sonic, chaos emeralds, super Sonic, Rogue the Bat, etc in this new gritty realistic Sonic universe while still staying true to the franchise.
I can’t say it’s a GREAT movie but it is a lot better than it could’ve been! The redesigned Sonic looked pretty good and it was absolutely the right call to get rid of the first model. But I can’t help but think Jim Carrey makes this movie, his Robotnik is just weird enough to make it genuinely funny in a few spots. It would’ve been a much worse movie with anyone else in that role.
Both of the teasers for what might be coming next were good fan service.
The sheriff is labeled a terrorist and there’s a nationwide manhunt for him. He’s all over the news. Yet he’s driving from Montana to San Francisco in his own truck, using his own credit cards, and no one finds him. No one is waiting for him at his wife’s sister’s place.
I rolled my eyes less hard at the fucking Olive Garden ads in the movie. It’s as bad as the car wreck in Detective Pikachu.
Still, it’s a kids’ movie, and I laughed at the right times.
And I’ve always thought it was a missed opportunity for Sonic the drive-in restaurant not to have their chillidogs be the official Sonic the Hedgehog ones. Granted, the brand has been floundering lately, but now I bet they’re kicking themselves.
I mean, Popeye’s wasn’t named after the spinach-eating sailor cartoon, but they still did brand deals with him.
Personally, I have a little bit of a gripe with the design of Sonic and the choice of Jim Carrey for Eggman.
I don’t have an issue with Sonic’s realistic fur, though I do dislike his face. His facial features seem too tiny. If the studio is making a movie off of a cartoony, fictional character, they should consider keeping the cartoony proportions and sizes of his facial features.
As much as I love Jim Carrey’s work, I think the actor for Eggman should have a little more of a pudgier body structure. I’m totally nitpicking on this one, but it just seems kind of strange to have such a thin and lean person playing a character that has been deisgned to be round and silly looking.
Did you see the original model before they delayed the film to re-do the CGI? Be happy we didn’t get THAT!
I saw it this weekend and it was okay. I mean, it kept a nine year old occupied and I didn’t deeply regret offering to take him so, as far as kids movies based on video games go, it was a winner. I wouldn’t be interested in watching it a second time but I’d probably take him for a sequel.
