Quite frankly, at the time the Avro Arrow was conceived, Canada had a pretty small industrial base. I would imagine that many of the high precision parts would have had to be imported (from the US or Europe) anyway. Plus, given the Canadian AF’s small size, how could an indigenous design fighter be built economically?
How Sweden manages to build its own fighters is a mystery to me…but they do export a few, so it helps spread the cost around.
Avro Canada was already building a less advanced jet fighter, the Canuck. Anyway, the building of supersonic aircraft was in its infancy in 1959. The US and Britain didn’t have much of a head start in that regard, and in any event the Arrow was more advanced than anything already in service (such as the Lightning, Starfighter or even the Mig-21.)
Sweden is able to build its own fighters economically because it has highly specialized operational requirements (cold weather operation and short field performance to allow takeoff from roads in time of war). It would cost just as much if not more to have existing designs tailored to meet their needs.
They also use off-the-shelf (or license built) avionics and other components, which limits effectiveness but keeps costs way down.
Well, FluffyBob, there are two completely different Avro Arrows.
The real one was designed by British citizens and build by wholly British-owned Avro Canada but paid for by Canadian taxpayers. That aircraft was a Mach 1.9 machine that was built, tested, found wanting, and cancelled for sensible reasons of economy [high price] and [mediocre] performance.
The other one is the imaginary All-Canadian Mach 2+/2.5+/3.0+/5.0+/3.5+ [it just keeps on getting better] machine that was the best aircraft ever made in the history of the universe. This one was so good that President Eisenhower conspired with Prime Minister Diefenbaker to destroy the program and thus prevent Canada from ruling the world.
Which of these aircraft would you like to know more about? Keep in mind the real aircraft was cancelled for sensible reasons but the myth was created for political ones.
