It’s been an unpleasant couple of months for Stephen Breyer. In February, the Supreme Court justice was robbed at his Caribbean vacation house by a man wielding a machete. And more recently, we’ve learned, he suffered a burglary at his Georgetown home.
A housekeeper discovered the break-in May 4. No one was home when it happened, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg confirmed to our colleague Robert Barnes. According to a police report, the burglar appears to have entered by breaking a pane of glass near the front door; a pair of $500 silver candlesticks and a 100-piece set of silver valued at $2,500 were taken. Arberg confirmed that no material from the court was missing. Gwyndolyn Crump, a spokeswoman for the D.C. police, said the investigation remains open.
Police put out an APB for one “Jean Valjean.”

I read once that “a woman is raped every two minutes in the US.” Maybe he’s her dad.
Breyer later announced that the man, a recent parolee, was not was not a thief. “I gave him the silverware,” Breyer explained in a pleasing baritone, “and when the police returned with him as a suspect, I gave him the candlesticks as well.”
I guess that life has killed that dream he dreamed.
