Justified, Baby! New mini-series!

FX generally runs multiple repeats in the week after an airing, just scroll though the week and you’ll find them (the premiere was two episodes back to back)

It’s also on Hulu if you have it, or if you still qualify for the free trial.

That’s what I thought. Thanks!

I don’t have Hulu. I’ll find it!

Thanks

I just watched the first episode. Kinda meh.

  • Raylan’s daughter as a snarky teen tagalong? I’m so done with that trope.
  • The bad guy seems like every other redneck psycho on every other cop show. And why would he abandon that sweet Caddy convertible just to steal a Chevy SS (which he subsequently also abandoned)?

Nothing about it so far seems especially Leonard-like, but I’m willing to follow along for another episode or two.

I am in agreement with you. It doesn’t matter how good your lawyer is, if you’re the kind of dumb ass criminal who kills a judge and his assistant just because they pissed you off on the road, you’re gonna go to jail. And probably get killed.

And what the actual fuck was that courtroom scene at the beginning? Dismissing/dropping charges during a bail hearing? Witness testimony during a bail hearing? Has every other court/cop show I’ve ever watched been wrong?

Someone should have done their research on Detroit, too, because other than having a few African American actors, it is inauthentic as hell.

After watching episodes 2-3, I’m a little more impressed. I still hate the teenage daughter subplot, but at least they got the obligatory daughter-in-peril-with-the-psychopath moment out of the way in episode 2 instead of saving it for the finale.

But the Elmore Leonard roots are starting to show, and that’s a very good thing. In classic Leonard style, it’s not a whodunit – we know whodunit, and so do all the characters. The fun comes from watching them dance around each other to see who’ll fuck up first.

Well, finished the series today. It was nice to see some familiar faces at the end, but otherwise it fell a little flat. I never really bought the romance angle for Raylan, and the finale with the Albanians seemed pretty ridiculous.

Your assessment jibes with ours. Raylan was basically a supporting character in this miniseries. Felt like the title should have been “Justified: The Life and Times of Clement Mansell.”

Didn’t like Raylan’s romance, didn’t like the obvious and overly contrived plot armor of the antagonist, didn’t like the ridiculous resolution to the Albanian situation, didn’t like Raylan’s daughter.

The first episode was promising (although the complete dismissal of charges against the carjackers was ridiculous), and the finale wasn’t bad at all. But the middle six episodes were just a slog to endure.

Would I be correct in thinking (hoping!) that Boyd Crowder’s escape in the last episode is a set up for a potential new series?

I’ve grown to hate most subplots, and this series has been no different. It’s had it’s moments, and Oliphant is always watchable, but the Harlan County series is a tough act to follow.

I saw the episode today. Previously, the Albanian mobsters have been shown as fearsome, but fell far too easily to Clement. Surely one of them would have been able to get a shot at him before he could kill them? Or someone else could have gone with Skender when he went after Clement.

BTW, I thought they were going to lower the security door on Clement’s leg like he did to Skender.

City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, the Elmore Leonard novel featuring Clement Mansell and the Albanians is an excellent read.

Right…I’m thinking if the Albanian mafia is that easy to take out, it would have been done a LOOOONG time ago. It was just stupid.

As for Clement, I think the writers were trying for a Boyd Crowder type character, but that guy took a long time to develop and was shown to be much more of a mastermind and have a lot more connections than just one bartender. It’s like they think Detroit is about 2 blocks and 400 people.

Also, YOU DON’T CROSS THE DETROIT RIVER (or even get close to it) UNLESS YOU’RE GOING TO CANADA. Dumbasses.

I honestly think by the end, much of the magic of the original Justified series had been wrung out. I don’t think they can really get much more of it even if they start another miniseries with good ol’ Boyd.

But I’d watch it. They could do some fun stunt casting with Olyphant and Josh Duhamel.

Finally got around to watching the finale. Yes, that Albanian thing sure was stupid. You send a guy on crutches – who’s not even an enforcer – to kill a psychopath solo? At least go with him. How did they really expect that to work?

But overall I liked the series pretty well. Except for the teen daughter subplot, it felt true to Leonard’s vibe. And I’ll happily watch next season for more Boyd Crowder.

It was fine. A well-made, generally well-written and well-acted show.

Except… call me shallow, but when I watch Justified, I want to see Raylan Givens kick ass and take names. I want to watch him out-draw, out-talk and out-think a rogue’s galley of crooks and lowlifes, and I just didn’t get that here. He was fine, but basically interchangeable with any other competent, honest law enforcement officer. Boyd Crowder was more Boyd in five minutes than Raylan was Raylan in the entire season.

I think he was falling in love. That softens a feller up. I’ll be sure to watch next season. Can’t wait.

We finished the series last week. I HATED the Raylan - Carolyn romance. They didn’t go together at all, it just seemed weird to me. I was expecting Raylan to show us a lot of his “Kick-Ass” but there wasn’t much of that. The most exciting part was seeing old Boyd again! I’m hoping that means another season that doesn’t include Albanians or Carolyn!

I hear ya, but the show explored how an older, less angry Raylan would approach the situation. And then, when he finally does draw, his victim didn’t even have a gun in his hand. Not as much fun, I’ll admit, but IMO a worthy direction for the reboot.

All right. I watched all six previous seasons with my 14yo daughter in preparation for this, so they were fresh in my mind. The original series is one of my all-time favorite shows. SO MANY good moments. Such incredible chemistry between Olyphant and everyone else on screen. Amazing character growth. And the best villains ever.

We finally finished Primeval ten minutes ago.

Meh.

It had some moments that were okay. But there was no interesting chemistry between any of the actors. The dialogue never had me cackling with glee at its sharp pops. The character growth was a bit interesting, but the path it took to get there was super contrived. The villain was totally forgettable.

Olyphant is fun, but he couldn’t carry the whole show on his shoulders.

Big disappointment for me.
