K-Mart or Walmart?

Chalk me up as a serious K-Mart hater. They can have 30 customers waiting to pay and leave at my local K-mart, and they’ll funnel them into 2 checkout registers each one 15 customers people deep. Its absurd. On those rare occasions when I go do to K-mart I make sure I have plenty of time because I’ve literally stood in line for longer than it took me shop. Every third item needs a freakin’ price check because it’s missing a tag or hasn’t been properly programmed into their cash register system. I have, on at least three occasions abandoned my cart at the service desk (after waiting in line 20 minutes or more, along with “suggestions” regarding better service. I just don’t understand the logic of making customers wait when all they want to do is give you money.

Walmart I have to drive to the next town over for but they always get you checked out in a hurry. Unfotunately - both their garden section and Target’s garden section are lacking so I don’t usually make it to those stores very often.

I need a device that zaps me if I press “submit reply” prior to proofreading and previewing.

Um…I’m not sure if I understand what you are trying to point out but I want to reiterate that I was trying to prove that K-Mart doesn’t have an anti-abortion stance. In fact, I think their actions that spawned the lawsuit say exactly the opposite. It seems like you think I posted those links as some sort of proof that they are anti-choice. IOW, don’t lump me in with those who believe the “K-Mart oppresses women!” crap!

FTR, it would appear that, in fact, K-Mart supports a woman’s right to choose.

Uh, what TopazAntares said. I also live in Edmonton, and my choices are Wal-Mart or Zellers. Wal-Mart is cheaper, but Zellers is closer.

We did have one K-Mart in the city for a while, but it closed down before I ever got a look at it.

Just a little help here:
If you are stuck in those long lines-PLEASE do NOT yell at the clerk. Do not COMPLAIN to her. Instead, say something like, “Gee, I really feel for you, don’t they give you more help?” Or something like that. Having been one of those two cashiers, I have been brought to tears more times than I can remember. Managment does not schedule enough people; no one wants to work there; people are always quitting/calling off, etc etc.

(I AM looking for another job, btw, but it ain’t easy)

Remember-I hate having to deal with that too. At least you CAN leave when you are fed up. I can’t.
And everyone wonders why I’m don’t smile and act happy when I’m there!

Is Meijer a chain type thing too or just something local? I went in one in Flint,MI and actually it was quite nice!

Ive never been to K-mart… but the only Walmart ive been to seemed nice… didnt have what i wanted tho…

Didnt like Target all that much… it look v-oldfashioned and i dunno the whole place just seemed deserted… ghost-store like… even tho there was plenty of people there… i didnt like the place at all… but it did have the stuff we were looking for so i guess its good for something…

Still totally liked Meijer the best tho!

Oh and clothes shopping? Why would u wanna do that in ANY of those stores??? unless ofcourse you wanna look like one of those typical americans with their SUVs and their… hey wait… this might not be the place to post this

Because the clothes at my Kmart-some sweaters, basic tops and long skirts are nice and affordable. They are also more affordable-something any college student can understand.

SOME things, I said. Most of their clothes are for little old ladies. But the basic stuff isn’t too bad.

And if I recall right, what he did was set up a Domino’s Foundation through which he funded anti-abortion groups, so that he could technically claim that Domino’s itself wasn’t funding them, even though the profits from Domino’s were.

I’ve only shopped at one Target store and it was horrible. The lighting made it look like a Soviet-era grocery store, the staff looked like they’d rather be beaten by sticks than help you, and the cashiers had the motivation of prisoners on day-release. The store’s location couldn’t have helped–it was in a formerly thriving shopping center that now had no other stores. If I go back to the States I fully expect the shopping center to be razed to the ground by now.

BTW, does anyone know whether the anti-abortion guy who was running Domino’s is still in charge? I seem to recall that he lost control of the company in a shake-up a few years ago.

Because I’m a grad student and it’s all I can afford right now.

Slightly OT: I almost never buy clothes in the mall anymore just out of principle. Most of the things I find are very simple and often not made very well but are still pretty expensive. I have a sewing machine, and if I really want something I can usually make it myself for a fraction of the cost. I saw a shirt that I loved in Dillard’s for $28. I made the same one for just over $4.

At Wal-Mart or Target I don’t care as much because the clothes are fairly cheap to begin with, and I usually can’t make them for much cheaper.

Why not go 2nd hand?

U can find the coolest stuff if you actually have the patience and look for it…

Ofcourse its no good if you live in hickville and everything at the 2nd hand store is just like walmart… 10 years ago

i do not often go to target, because the nearest one is 20 minutes away from me.
i do not get shoes at walmart, they do not fit, or i do not like them. i can’t find a purse at either kmart or walmart. i get most of my tshirts from kmart, i have not found any good ones at walmart. i get my jeans at walmart.
i do not enjoy it, but i shop there because i can go to both, without making two separate trips.

Meijer is a chain of shores, not unlike a superwalmart or super kmart, giant warehouse stores where you can get groceries, prescriptions, clothes, books toys, and kitchen stuff. to the best of my knowledge, meijer stores are only found in michigan, ohio, indiAna, and illinois.

2nd hand…the Salvation Army Shop is near me…but the stuff they always have is junk.
Nothing good…sigh
Nor at Good Will…

Whichever is closest to the other errands that I’m running.

      • Where I live the Wal-Marts are a bit nicer overall, with more selection than Big-K or Target.
  • I don’t know how Target got this cool and hip reputation; I’ve seen the business press also, but the only Target near me looks like an airplane hangar with a bunch of chrome racks scattered across the floor. It looks like a warehouse store, but it’s looked basically the same for twenty years. I’m not a clothes horse so I don’t know that their merchandise is any better now than it was before. It’s still cheap, so I guess not much, if any. Their CD selection still bites in comic proportions.
  • The clothes from these places tends to shrink - a lot. I need to buy an XXXL to get a wearable XL, and even then after it shrinks it isn’t proportioned right. The shoes seem to not fit well also. - MC

quKMart is OK for basic stuff (car parts, oil, fluids, etc.) and basic pharmaceuticles (toothpaste, vitamins, etc.) Also, I’ve found that the white goods 9sheets, towels etc.) are of acceptable ality. For clothes-neither KMARTor Crapmart are very different-most of the stuff is made in China or the third world, and falls apart quickly. These places don’t pretend to be anything but what they are-basic low cost/low quality merchandise. You get what you pay for.One thing I’ve noticed-clothing brand names have a life cycle-you can usually find good brand names from the past at KMart/Crapmart. I can remember when Thom McAnn was a very acceptable shoe brand (men’s shoes). They are now available at KMart, and , as you might expect, they are now made in China, of synthetic leather. Real junk!
I guess the real reason I don’t like Crapmart is the old geezer/greeters at the door!

I like Ross (a close out clothing store for the department stores). It has only one of each style, but I only need one. Most things like slacks and sweaters don’t change all that much in one season.
