K2, P2 - A Knitty MMP

Pictures of my weekend adventure.

Old bad shot, from move in remodel. VWife has been after me for 2 years to redo the bathroom, because she hated the blue walls and the bad job laying the floor tile. We spent last weekend doing the floor, and had to stop because of the wet floor under the john from an existing leak.

This is where I started. You can see the wet floor here, also.

First step was yanking the old toilet. Then, I cut out the old plywood floor, and cut a new piece as areplacement.

The new flange was offset, so the john was moved away from the wall. The old one was too close, pushing the tank forward and causing the leak. It’s obvious to me the old was has leaked like that for years. Here’s the new flange, waterline, and floor tile. The brick and tiles are weights to hold down a cranky tile over the seam I made. It’ll probably get a shot of glue when we finish the woodwork.

The toilet wasleveled per instruction, and here’s a shot of the end of the project yesterday.

Coming up next weekend is floorboards and wainscoting.

Livni or Netanyahu?

Didn’t you have a holiday today that doesn’t fall under the theme of “They tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat!”?

I took Zeldadog for two long walks yesterday (I was feeling antsy) and then walked all over downtown today in heels. The backs of my thighs are killing me so what do I do? Clean the bathroom, which involves kneeling down and scrubbing the floor. :smack: Stupid seasonal changes.

Well. Despite a lack of sleep and rather busy day, I had a productive day of blogging. I surprised even myself. Awesome. Maybe if I get enough sleep tonight I’ll be even more productive tomorrow.

SmartyPants - Surprisingly – especially considering this is a Microsoft product – Windows 7 is actually quite good. For a beta, it’s remarkably stable. There are certain driver issues with the 64-bit version – but they’re the same driver issues you’d have with just about any 64-bit version, XP or Vista. (That is, some vendors never bothered making 64-bit drivers for their products, or just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Fortunately, reports are that the majority of Windows 7 installations will likely be 64-bit, if for no other reason than to take advantage of cheap RAM and the necessity to use 64-bit if you want more than 4 gigs total between main RAM and video. That will probably spur many more vendors to develop 64-bit drivers.) The vast majority of my software has worked; I’ve found only a couple of things that didn’t. There are no virtual drive applications (i.e. Daemon Tools) that work under 7 yet, for example. My printer doesn’t work on 7 either – again, lack of 64-bit drivers. However, I was able to install XP to a virtual machine under VMWare, which was cool 'cos the wife isn’t used to 7 yet. Since my printer has WiFi, I was able to connect to it within the virtual XP macihne and print from there. That was kind of weird in a meta sort of way. 7 pretty much uses Vista drivers, so 99% of stuff that works on Vista should work on 7.

Yes, it still looks a great deal like Vista, but it has a smaller footprint and feels a lot more responsive than Vista. (Benchmarks have shown however that real-world tasks aren’t really any faster on 7 under the same hardware, and are still faster under XP.) There are a few issues here and there, but as a beta, this is far closer to a finished product right out of the box than any of their previous betas. I’ve had to be careful what I’ve installed though – mostly again due to 64-bit issues, particularly pertaining to drivers of any sort, because it can really screw things up. However, there’s a lot of security available – frequent system restore checkpoints and the ability to restore individual programs to an earlier state as well. (I don’t know if Vista had that though; I never “upgraded” to it.)

I’m actually impressed by 7. It’s the Vista that Vista should have been, and is the first truly viable replacement for XP in my opinion. I never once considered upgrading to Vista, as the more I heard and read about it the more I disliked it. 7 on the other hand has been quite the opposite so far. Unfortunately it’s going to go the Vista route when it’s released: 6 damn versions to choose from. (Granted, one of them will only be offered to developing markets, but that’s still 5 domestic SKUs to pick from.)

If you’re thinking about 7, it’s worth checking it out. If you’re already running Vista, try a dual boot with 7 installed to a different partition. I think you’ll like it. It’s dead easy to install, and it did so pretty quickly – faster than XP. If you’re running XP though, you can still install but you have to jump through some hoops to get the dual boot menu working with it due to the different methods each OS uses for booting. (7 uses the same method as Vista, so you’d have the same problem dual-booting Vista with XP.)

Anyway, that’s my (not quite so quick) Windows 7 review. I’m looking forward to its release. I just hope they don’t break anything between now and then.

I don’t like Mondays!
I can’t knit - I can only perl. Many people have tried to convice me that since I can perl. I can knit, but I can only go from left needle to right needle, and only behind. I’ve tried, really I have, many times. My brain won’t accept any other combination of needles and yarn.
I can manage a double crochet, and used to be able to knock out granny squares with surprising speed, but not for many years.
Sewing is (was) more my thing, as is (was) costume and fashion design. If I ever get the downstairs room remodeled to the laundry/sewing room I’ve envisioned for years, I may get back into it. For now, I just doodle clothing designs.

It was actually light when I left work today. Yay! Spring is coming! (So is baseball season!)

that’s all I got.

blurf.

Lunch- re: ortho…

It’s time.

Braces.

Two kids. One needs about 6 teeth extracted. Might be able to avoid braces this way.

The other: braces. Crimminy it’s expensive…

Oh- and I hereby send you somewhere warm, breezy and restful for two days. Go… get along… go…

I’m making this in cranberry and charcoal. It’s very easy, I just keep getting the different balls of yarn all tangled up.

I’m really the only knitter I know, but I bookmarked thisbecause it looks so darn cute…one of these days…

Holy crap… page 2 on the first day? Y’all sure are a chatty bunch today.

I survived a whole day of tables training, which is easily the boringest thing in the world. Ever. Everyone should be very very proud of me for not falling asleep or occupying myself by playing solitaire on my laptop the whole time Star employee… that’s me!

Oh, and since I suppose I should write something vaguely tangential to the OP, I’m taking a Knitting 101 class in April, which I’m horrendously excited about. I already crochet fairly well, though. The last thing I made was a little baby blankie for my friend’s baby girl, which you can glimpse in this pic.

A friend of my mom’s taught me to knit and purl when I was in high school. I bought various magazines with patterns and taught myself to follow them. I think my mom may have shown me some basic crochet, but most of what I know I learned from books.

Over the years, I’ve made slippers, hats, sweaters (both cardigan and pullover), a jacket, scarves, dish cloths, pot holders, vests, and a gazillion afghans. Honestly, I don’t think I could tally all the afghans I’ve made, but I know in this house, there are at least half a dozen, and all my sibs and my mom have some. As do some friends. I love afghan patterns. I intend to make a bunch for Project Linus and maybe some lap robes for a local nursing home. Heck, if you buy the yarn, I’ll make you one. Yes, you!

I’d rather knit than crochet, but I’d rather do either than do needlepoint or embroidery. Of course, I now have 2 cats to help me. That makes it interesting.

Speaking of new cats, no pics yet. No name for her, either. **FCD **calls her Fuzzbutt, but I refuse to accept that name. I wanted a Z name, but I’m also considering Fannie or Fae. I dunno. She hasn’t given me any hints yet, but she lurves belly skritches.

Scruffy went to the vet today - she got a once-over, a shot, and a pedicure. All in about 10 minutes. I love our vets - the practice is wonderful. I wish I liked my own doctor as much!

Welcome go all new Mumpers and returning visitors! Fresh input is always great - sometimes I think we get into a rut. But it’s a nice rut, dammit!

And another Monday bites the dust.

Uh-oh. I went on eBay looking for deals and ended up bidding on three obi. I could’ve bid on a bunch more. I hope I don’t win all three! (Two would be okay. I can do $30. $45 is a bit much.) I’m trying to stall for the hour until they’re up.

Nava, here is the bike.

Obviously this is not my bike. Although I did give him 25 cents towards the registration fee, so I suppose I have an investment in it. He took me home on it last night, driving very slowly and taking the side roads - it was only a five minute jaunt. I was still a little terrified - my legs were actually a bit shaky because I was clutching the seat so hard with my thighs. Still, I think I’ll get used to it. Once I get a helmet I’ll be a lot more relaxed, I think.

Just don’t tell my mom that I’m wandering around Seoul on the back of a motorbike. With a white guy no less. I can only imagine what her reaction would be.

Home. I took Gordie for a half mile run(15 minutes). He’s been going non stop since then. My apartment is a mess. It was not a mess when I got home.:dubious: My next dog is going to be a 15 year old quadraplegic Basset Hound. picture

welcome newbies! I can’t knit, but i can sew on a button.

Welcome back, BooFae!

Nice bike, Haze.

Paging Hazel’s mom! Paging Hazel’s mom! Your daughter is dating white men who talk funny and drive motorcycles! I’m only telling you so you’ll be jealous!

Am back from award ceremony. It was hot in the gym, but the thingy went well. Am now in my jammies and ready for the morrow. 0530, here I come…
Knit link does not work,** ivylass**–it takes me to a registration page for Lion yarn. #2 son asked me to knit him some handwarmers, so now I have a Project.

Vundie–great job on the tile and toilet! Most impressive.

My goodness, we’re bringing everyone out of the woodwork today, aren’t we? Welcome, KnitWit, Solfy, alice, Idlewild, Marlitharn, Abraca Deborah, and as_u_wsh (I think that was all the newbies)!

I’m on Ravelry Deborah (I love your user name, by the way) and have friended you. (I’m gardentraveler over there as well.) If anyone else wants to friend me over there, you’re welcome to.

Hi beebs and all the returning Mumpers! Glad to see you’re around, BooFae, we’ve missed you.

Cool patterns that everyone shared. That shawl was exactly what I was looking for, taxi. I’ve decided that I need a couple of them.

I can relate to the needing to take a day off work to knit, KnitWit.

And I have to agree with Mudshark that you can’t have too many blankets.

That’s a purty blanket, Muppet. Crochet is up next on my list of things to remember. But first there’s lots of knitting.

And rigs. I want ever so badly to get to Chicago just to teach you how to purl.

I saw you call me a crone, Smartie. But, yeah, I think it’s a stage of life thing.

Gordie sounds like just what you needed, doggio.

I’ve been writing this post for a couple of hours know. Interrupted by a couple of phone calls and then some e-mails that I had to look at. Including the ski venue where my brother will be celebrating his 50th.

Had a long work day, so I’m just going to sign off here and send rosie’s sig out to everyone I missed…

Back tomorrow with a bit of coherence, I hope.

GT

What other reason do you NEED? Get up here and teach me how to purl, woman! I’ll make cookies. I promise.

I am dying to get into the garden, which is a huge mudflat right now and likely to remain so for the next 2 months at least. I love a nice mid-winter thaw, but it gets my green thumbs all itchy!

I must have missed a few posts because I don’t recall BooFae. 'Ullo, BritDopers! Did your snow melt yet?

When I got to my car after classes today I noticed that my doors were unlocked. Weird, but I am absent minded sometimes so I thought no big deal. Then I noticed my glove compartment is open (aside - why is it still called a glove compartment? why don’t we just go ahead and call it a condom and registration box?). I rifled through it but didn’t see anything missing so I chalked it up to kids and went on my way. This afternoon I got a call from the University police and he said “so are you missing anything?” and I told him about the glove compartment but that I didn’t think I missed anything and he said “Do you have an account at Cadence bank?” and I said “Oh shit do you have my red wallet?”

Yep, it was in the glove compartment. I didn’t remember it because I had just bought one of those little keyring purses to hold my ID and cards. I had switched my active credit cards and ID into that and left the wallet in my glove box in case I went out and wanted something more. I had left my inactive cards and a couple other things in there. Oh wait, the only thing missing from the wallet was… my social security card and my son’s social security card.

Fuck.

They left credit cards that they had no way of knowing were out of service. My wallet was found in the university soccer field with only those two pieces missing. And since I had parked on a city street, not the campus, all I can do is pick up my stuff tomorrow and report to the city police department. The campus officer was very nice about it and gave me a number to call and told me all the prompts to go through so I wouldn’t have to listen to the whole menu and try to figure out who to ask for (it’s the little things in life that make it OK, ya know). He told me he was sorry it had happened to me.

I’m just glad that this past weekend I moved all my cards over to my keyring wallet and had just cleaned my car this weekend.

I am hopeful but I am not expecting much because really - do you think they’ll send out a fingerprint team to go over a car that has been used for 24 hrs after the crime? Not likely, and I’d not expect it.

I would love to see the look on those kids faces when they try to get a credit card with my credit. I fucking dare them to fuck it up worse than what I have managed to do with two ex-husband deadbeats and their bills and BS weighing me down for the past 6 years.

Oh well. I never did mind about the little things…

ETA - I should not say that about the exes because I let things go much farther than I had to and can’t blame anyone for my bad credit other than me. So sorry. I was in the midst of a pity party.

I can knit and do other stuff at the same time (Saturday was spent knitting while at the hockey game, and in the evening playing Mario Party with friends and knitting between my turns…) but reading + knitting doesn’t seem to work so well for me. Which is why I prefer audio books.

What’s actually even more awesome is I know Amy and bought the yarn at her store. It’s a gorgeous shop that is the best place to hang out. Too bad she’s moving to Toronto and trying to sell it. Her wife is currently keeping things going. It’s so tempting to look into how much they want for it and if I could get a loan to buy it… but I don’t know the first thing about running a business except for it’s a lot of work and despite having a diploma in business I know nothing. (I’m not worthy!)

That’s pretty! Hmm… I probably have seen it before but it didn’t ping my radar, but it would be perfect for work…

That’s gorgeous Solfy! You should share pictures!

anyrose I’m confused… you only go from your left to your right needle, were you trying to knit from your right to your left? Unless I’m reading you wrong then just ignore me. (though it wouldn’t surprise me if someone, somewhere, does the opposite). You do the same for knitting as purling, only the needle goes in the front instead of the back and the yarn is pulled forward from the back instead of from front to behind…

There are some crochet patterns I want to do also. I just need to apply what I know to patterns. (Grandma showed me how to crochet long ago but until recently I’d never read a crochet pattern).

Work is slow, which somewhat worries me. I’m not really budgeted for, being a JOAT, and I used to be in the shipping office but now I’m the assistant to the logistics manager. So I keep my nose to the grindstone and don’t really refuse when asked to do something (nothing onerous anyway, I’ve been helping set up the new shipping office in between my usual duties… that kind of thing).

Blah enough rambling. I’m tired, so I am pondering sleep…

You folks are so talented! I have no skills. None. My mom and one sister can make all sorts of things. Me? Nothing. You guys rock.

I’m taking a stained glass window class starting March. It may be laughable, but it should be fun.

Haze I am happy you got a new helmet. Please get a nice leather jacket and some chaps, if not pants, for riding with.
You’ll be safer and look incredible besides.
Be safe out there!

I’ve always thought knitting was harder than crocheting, is that true? I just started to learn how because a few od my friends know how and showed me. And I like to get a rise out of people when they see a guy crocheting.
